ahhhh...so it goes back to roman mythology in which jupiter would sometimes traval as a human. in one story they turned him away, so he killed them all. thus jupiter was also a patron of travelers, since no one would know if that one knocking on the door was jupiter.

i think a lot of the mixed symbology, with which christianity was later infected (being a primarily political/religious struggle) came into the writings when the apostles were trying to NOT DIE in the roman world.
