the anniversary of his death is pretty soon...ten years before i was born, but he is still remembered. rest in peace
i remember the day that you came to america with the beatles and won us american kids over and i remember all the work you did in the peace movement, you and yoko, and i remember the sad day that your life was taken from you. i've always loved and admired you, john, you had such a rebellious and strong spirit, you changed the way i thought about so many things and you wrote such incredible music. imagine is my favorite song and i always sing it every year for your birthday and the anniversary of your passing to the next life. angel
Yeah, John Lennon has been missed in the years he has been gone. A question I hear many of us older hippies ask is, "What were you doing when you heard that John Lennon had been murdered?"...I was just getting out of bed, ready to go to school. The news hit me like board. The rest of the day, everyone was in a stupor. The teachers couldn't teach. The students couldn't learn. We could only mourn one of the greatest musicians/wayshowers of our time. It was a hard day for just about everyone.
fuck john lennon!! his souls in hell!! fuckin overrated fuckin heroin addict becomes a martyr an the folks that dont know what a arrogant punk ass junkie WHO THOUGHT he WAS god,,, worship his mediocre arrogant ass.. hes burnin in hell shootin heroin constantly,,an funny thing is,, he never gets the rush.. FUCK JOHN LENNON AN FUCK THE MOST OVERRATED BAND OF ALL TIME!! THE BEATLES!!
John Lennon's music changed me in multiple ways and to a great degree when I was younger, and I don't care if it's cliche to remember him. Fuck all of these arrogant assholes who feel the need to bash the guy and his fans on such a day... damn pricks.
Hippiehillbilly has been on the fucking farm too long. What makes you such a prick, man? The Beatles are the most overrated band ever? Your opinion, which meant very little to me before, now means absolutely nothing. John Lennon gave and gave and gave some more and look what it got him. Yet millions of people still strive to follow his example. Seems pretty sensible to me. seeing as we're all after the same thing more or less.
Although his physical body si no longer with us, the Universal Spirit will never let his spirit die. That said, he will live forever. John, you're deep in my thoughts on this very significant day.
John Lennon... What an influential figure. The Beatles as a whole, actually.. But anyway, here's to you, John... Rock on forever.
I remember when that article came out and Lennon was horribly missquoted. We may never fully understand the incredible power of Beatlemania to sweep people away in a sea of emotions. But at the height of their popularity in the spring of 1966, a segment of the American public demonstrated how that overpowering love could turn to hate very quickly. On March 4, 1966, this quote of John's was printed in an interview by reporter Maureen Cleave in the London Evening Standard: "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." Then, almost five months later, on July 29, a teen magazine in the US, Datebook, reprinted the quote out of context, not submerged in an article, but as a part of a front cover story entitled "The Ten Adults You Dig/Hate The Most". All hell broke loose. Radio stations in the south banned Beatles music. There were rallies of boys and girls stomping on their records and bonfires of Beatles material Commenting on the uproar over the article in America, Maureen Cleave in London said, "John was certainly not comparing the Beatles with Christ. He was simply observing that so week was the state of Christianity that the Beatles were, to many people, better known. He was deploring, rather than approving, this." And at a press conference in New York, to try and head off the growing controversy, Brian Epstein told reporters, "The quote which John Lennon made to a London columnist has been quoted and misrepresented entirely out of context of the article, which was in fact highly complimentary to Lennon as a person." It did no good. The upcoming US tour was now only days away. Amidst threats on his and the other Beatles' lives, and the possible cancellation of the tour, John, notorious for never apologizing, condescends and has a news conference in Chicago on August 11, 1966: John: "If I had said television is more popular than Jesus, I might have got away with it, but I just happened to be talking to a friend and I used the words "Beatles" as a remote thing, not as what I think - as Beatles, as those other Beatles like other people see us. I just said "they" are having more influence on kids and things than anything else, including Jesus. But I said it in that way which is the wrong way." Reporter: "Some teenagers have repeated your statements - "I like the Beatles more than Jesus Christ." What do you think about that?" John: "Well, originally I pointed out that fact in reference to England. That we meant more to kids than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn't knocking it or putting it down. I was just saying it as a fact and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that we're better or greater, or comparing us with Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this." I also have been taken out of context and mis-quoted whan I wrote a letter to a newspaper about Jesse Helms years ago....I have never written to a newspaper again. I just wanted to let all the younger people here know that Lennon never said that HE thought they were greater than God or Jesus or whatever.....
