Has anyone else noticed that some creatures seem to give off an instinctive reaction of disgust in humans?

Roaches are the prime candidate -- but lately these stink-bugs(/shield bugs) have been spreading across the US (especially eastern) and I think they are a great example.

When they first hit Pittsburgh, even before the news or Internet told us what they were called; many of us feared and hated these things. Turns out, they don't do much to harm humans -- but to most whose houses they are attracted to they are absolute pests.

Are we hardwired to hate them?

Do you have any stink bugs?/. They are annoying,, Cute at first.. Til they start flying making crashing noise. then its time to die!!.. They dont really bother me, I have a cup on my desk with about 40/50 of them.. I was thinking of painting them, or making some kinds little circus this with their dead bodies.. I get a few news ones day..

Worst bug ever: palmetto bug. Its the same thing as a cockroach but bigger and flys. When they fly the batting of their wings seem to pierce the air.

I dont think its our hardwiring that makes us disgusted by them. Its what makes the insects that we dont like. We're familiar with that irritating tickling sensation when one is crawling on you. Theyre fast, scavengers, and there are a lot of them. Not only all of that but our dislike comes from a projected image we grew up understanding. People think bugs are gross so we do. Of course with excepting of the few who are fascinated by them.

I dunno, crickets are pretty damn cute.

And centipedes always creeped me the fuck out. Surely, other people's opinions influence us - but their opinions must've started somewhere.

The tickling sensation is the part that stands out the most to me, though.

What about their sneakiness - that they are so regularly out of our awareness?

I think that any bug outside is not so bad. The exception is potato bugs in my garden, those I squish with pleasure. The minute the invade my house, they are goners.

Those things are EVERYWHERRRRE all over Pittsburgh. I live south of Pittsburgh but I find at least 3 of them in my apartment a day. I always thought they were stink bugs.. I just put them on a piece of paper and shoo them outside. They're kinda cute actually haha.

    Not cute at all!

I hate these vile creatures so much that I won't kill them (because then they release hormones that attract stink bugs!)

The brown marmorated stink bug , an insect not previously seen on our continent, was apparently accidentally introduced into eastern Pennsylvania. It was first collected in September of 1998 in Allentown, but probably arrived several years earlier. As of September 2010, it has been recorded from the following 37 counties, although it is probable that they are in all counties:

Adams, Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Berks, Blair, Bucks, Butler, Cambria, Carbon, Centre, Chester, Clinton, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Franklin, Indiana, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mercer, Mifflin, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland, Perry, Philadelphia, Pike, Snyder, Washington, Westmoreland and York

It is also recorded from many other states such as:

California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

This true bug in the insect family Pentatomidae is known as an agricultural pest in its native range of China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Recently, it has become a serious pests of fruit, vegetables and farm crops in the Mid-Atlantic region and it is probable that it will become a pest of these commodities in other areas in the United States.

the stink bug becomes a nuisance pest both indoors and out when it is attracted to the outside of houses on warm fall days in search of protected, overwintering sites. It occasionally reappears during warmer sunny periods throughout the winter, and again as it emerges in the spring.

Ive grown up with stink bugs around all the time living in Florida. Personally, I have no gripe with insects. For me it depends if I can see it or not. If I can see whatever it is crawling on me, I dont care, Ill just brush it off. If I feel something crawling and dont see it Ill search frantically for the little shit and wipe it off.

I think its mostly the image we've projected onto them. Theres the creepy/crawly types and then theres your cute types I suppose. The menacing ones are always fast, come in large numbers or are poisonous.

I do though HATE centipedes, millipedes, whatever that type of insect is called

many times I capture the stink bug.. but in my one room full of tools. I have a pluming torch on the table, sTink bugs are fire proof .. lemme tell yeah!!. they are very tough- a pass over with a high flame does nothing to them, barely singes them.. you have to hold the flame on them for a good second or 2..
