I like all types of music, from techno to punk, and have liked (and played) all sorts of acoustic music for a while, but am just now getting more into it, as well as picking the violin back up (as soon as I can find a shitty "student" one) and picking up where I left off on sucking at guitar.

So, here's some awesome shit. Feel free to contribute. No "country" you would hear on the radio (if you're old enough to remember the "radio", that is) or other such cheap commercial bullshit. If you want 3 chord songs with no character, listen to AC/DC, they have some good ones.

Here's bill monroe, the inventor of bluegrass. His songs are pretty religious, but HOLY FUCK that's crazy falsetto.

Here's another one by bill. It's an interesting one, and again, shows off his unique singing.

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI92oDdXazg&feature=related

Last bill video, his selection on youtube is very limited and has SHIT for sound quality.

Here's jerry garcia, david grisman, and tony rice (all legends) playing shady grove. Doc watson also has a very good (but diferent) version of it, if you like this. And garcia and grisman did another, more polished version on on the album by the same title.

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0ODUbDLS7A&feature=related

Here's garcia and grisman, playing dreadful wind and rain, from the album called shady grove that I mentioned above. Sorry about the retarded pictures during it.

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYe_JMvh8oU&feature=related

I don't really expect anyone to even listen to these, but I'll post here anyways, as I find cool new things. This is actually all stuff I knew, I thought to make the thread when I found doc watson playing shady grove, which I then omitted from here... I figured bill monroe would drive people off enough, garcia's version is harder to dislike :p

When I was in my early twenties I was really into John Hartford. Went to see him in concert one time in Booneville MO but I don't remember when it was in the 70's or 80's. Man could he play his fiddle and banjo. He'd give the "devil down in Georgia" a run for the gold fiddle. :)

I think a lot of people don't realize that Hartford, and not Glen Campbell, authored Gentle on My Mind. He was also a riverboat captain, and wrote songs about the river and "river life".

But his songs had character, which you'll notice is my other criteria :p

He was commercial, but still a badass.

I don't mind people who are less able with an insturment, if they know their limits, and work well witin them to make music that's still good. A prime example would be kurt cobain/nirvana. Really, he was a pretty shitty guitar player, and none to talented a singer. But his songwriting ability was amazing, and put together the full potential of his abilities and styles singing and playing guitar to make some badass music.

On the note (harr) of johnny cash, hope someone didn't link this one already: a good example of what I meant above.

Sort of distorted, I'spose... meh. Still ain't deathmetal.
