I'm thinking of visiting Russia at some time next year. Probably either St Petersburg or Moscow. Just wondering if anyone else has been there, and are there any tips you can offer?

I'm sure that both of those cities in Russia are actually on the European side of the Urals.... Maybe this thread would be more appropriate in the European forums?

Could be right - it's hard to say if Russia is part of europe or asia.

Most of Russia is in Asia but those two major cities are part of Eastern Europe. I would definitely stick to Moscow of St. Pete.
I am so jealous! I wanna go :) Do you speak Russian BlackbillBlake?

Not at present, but I'm intending to learn to speak some before I go to Russia. Probably, I would be going in about 5-6 months time.

I agree that the culture of western Russia is more European than Asian. But it's also a bit different - one of the reasons I'm interested in Russia.

Awesome. Well I'd start learning now :) I've been studying Russian for 2 years and am nowhere near fluent. I'd say I'm semi-conversational. It's a difficult language.

I'd hope just to pick up some basics over the next months - I intend doing night classes - but yes, I've been told Russian isn't easy to learn.
