Satanists conduct a ritual on the state Capitol - Seattle

Coincidentally there are more christians who believe Satan is an entity, than satanists.

What are satanists confused about? The label? Seems a conscious choice. Satan is originally not a name but a word meaning adversary or opposer (or as a verb oppose). This is how they take it. They basically oppose following any God (hence why certain atheists see some use for it too as well apparently)

 

I wish they had chosen Temple of Lucifer or something as the name of their church. Lucifer means "bearer of light", light being a metaphor for knowledge.

 

That name might already be taken...

If not it will be now, just because of your post.

Satan, as he originally appears in the Hebrew Bible as ha-Satan, was indeed "the adversary" or accusor--a kind of heavenly prosecutor and enforcer in Yaweh's court. In the New Testament, he is the tempter of Jesus. The choice of labels by the Satanist church in question may be conscious but seems odd, since their tenets of benevolence and compassion.seem at variance with traditional concepts of Satan. Sigh., even Satanists aren't what they used to be. Another source of confusion is that the Church of Satan, founded by Anton LeVay & dedicated to "the acceptance of man's true nature as a carnal beast" is still in existence, and seems to be a different outfit from this one, the Satanic Temple. Of course it's a free country, and they can use whatever labels they want, however they want. There are lots of denominations of Christians. Christians could call Jesus the Devil and become Devil worshipers if they want. But why? As an alternative to "confused", how about weird? As for the morning star, Lucifer, and his equation with Satan, that legend seems to draw heavily from non-canonical material.

and in the Koran he is shatan, so really the group is a slight on all those faiths but the group is only targeting one.
