how do you get a cat to use one? i got kisses last year, shes 8 years old and was already trained by previous owners. i'd like to get her to use a scratching post since shes really into scratching carpet and chairs, but i'm not sure how to. any ideas?? every time she starts scratching the carpet i bring the post to her, but that doesnt seem to work.
Have you tried forbidding her from using it? LOL My mother insisted on having our cats surgically declawed. I think this is kind of cruel, but it does make them extra cuddly.
I buy the cardboard flat ones and put catnip on it.... Rosco goes ape shit over it still even though he is declawed.
she doesnt scratch me at all, the only reasons the claws are a problem is the furniture. but i do not want to declaw her after shes had her claws for 8 years, i'm sure she is accustomed to them and declawing might make her feel astranged and all. em, i havent seen the catnip type of scratching post. i already bought a regular one and would like to have her use it somehow.
you have to train them, whenever she is scratching around take her to the post & grab here claws & claw them on the post Just do that untill she gets the idea !!!!
haha, i actually did that and felt kinda silly i just got it so hopefully she will catch on soon, she is a pretty smart cat.
sprinkle some cat nip on it, and if you can, place it next to the spot (or piece of furniture) that she prefers to scratch. Cats usually like to scratch near where they sleep as well as what they are used to. And you might feel a bit silly but getting down on all fours and showing her how it's done could help a little as well.
