    Got a smart phone?

You might like to watch this channel 4 news article, apparently it's dead easy for anyone in the world to hack into your phone and set it to record everything you say, even if it is switched off, take photographs, get access to all your data on it...

Kind of scary, what can you do to be sure you are safe- carry it around in a metal case?

Some fair points, but also some alarmist nonsense. Using it when turned off? Really? :D

Carrying it round in a lead case would help, but it wouldn't be much use as a phone afterwards! Nowt wrong with of paranoia.

If you're that concerned about being watched, then you're probably best of without the internet as well.

I dont really get the smartphone thing anyway.

Got a netbook at the moment, love that, its easier to carry around in the briefcase. Probably going to buy a Tablet PC soon, same dealio - Either way, they've got everything on there.

Why do you need basically the same shit on a mobile phone?, and the screens are too small anyway

But I see it all the time on the train, they're updating their facebook status "Oh man, thank god its friday, I'm going to get so wasted. - 7 Dickheads like this" while their squinting at some pokey little screen

    Stupid

You'd be surprised...obviously you don't want to view the internet as it appears on your PC very often, but there are plenty of mobile optimized sites, great for catching up with the new for example. I often get emails offering me work, so it's handy to check my calendar and get straight back to them

The GPS is great when in the hills, no substitute for a map a compass, but there have been times in bad weather I've been glad it's there.

My netbook is great, but it's something I plan to take out with me, whereas the phone is always on me.

Well you got a choice a chip in your phone or a chip in your brain. They're going to track you either way.

It might be just me but I would pick phone everytime:)

If you're that paranoid, get a PAYG handset and don't register the SIM.
