    Hi everyone!

Has anyone here tried not dreading all of their hair on their head, more like dreading it by 50-70%? I was thinkin' about this 'cause my girl had just started trying out backcombing and semi-crocheting 2 chunks of my hair, planning on continuing on it for the rest of the week since we started it late at night already.

I think it looks kinda cool not having all of them dreaded, so I was thinking on dreading just 50-70%, probably evened off on the sides and back..

    What do you guys think?

With that much dreaded, it'll be hard to keep the rest of your hair from being tangled into your dreads.

I only have the front half of my hair dreaded. back half is short. if its longer and you want to keep part of it undreaded, you need to comb it out occassionally so it doesn't become dreads itself.

I imagine it would take A LOT of work to keep it from combining. I started my dreads one month ago yesterday, and already the roots are all combining. Work work work.....

but that's already dreaded hair... long loose hair takes a bit longer to try to combine with already dreaded hair...

I'd say just be sure to comb it every day or two if you want it to stay loose.

I started out with a full head of backcombed dreaded hair. Then I would guess 50% fell out and was undreaded at the back. I then T&R'd it all about a month ago. My hair was not getting eaten by the other dreads, but I have pin straight hair. I think you would have a much harder time keeping it separated if you had curly hair.

There are some members on here that do not dread their bangs.

I probably wouldn't mind if they'll combine eventually, that way they'll somehow become "natural" dreads by then... And yeah, looks like combing them out to keep some of them undreaded would be a lot of work...

I might keep my bangs or dread it last, 'cause I personally find it rather critical.

Anyone kind enough to post photos/links of theirs that are similar? :)

i kept my bangs. the parts that are close to my locks sometimes get sucked in and i have to pull them back out. but, as long as they're short, they won't lock up.

your hairs will def get sucked into the dreads so it will be a lot of work keeping them separate.

It could be cool though, I recommend you dread the hair underneath, like the bottom layer, and in front, that would probably look best and be easiest to maintain.

It depends on your hair. Mine is fairly straight, I backcombed and after going in the ocean a few times, some fell out. They never re-dreaded on their own, most of the hair in the back was just loose and wouldn't dread until I crocheted it.. So unless you have really straight hair, just comb the hair you don't want in dreads from time to time.

And it could look great or not. That depends on how you do it, I suppose.

if your hairs over 6 or 8 inches it'll just dread on its own
if your set on backcombing 1/2 then just let the other 1/2 go naturall

then just for fun put beads or something on all the backcombed dreads so u can track the differences in progress and end ressults

75% of my hair is dreaded.. if u want pics let me know i can shoot some to you or post on here with my phone.. Also yes it is pretty hard to keep separate and a little annoying but i only have had it all done for 2 weeks. im getting pretty use to it, and the washing. I love it..

Cool cool, I've checked your week-old photo Liz6363, they look nice! Looks like I might really take the semi-dreads route :)

I've already started using Dr. Bonner's just to get hang of it, so far so good. I do notice that it's becoming a bit loose, maybe cause we didn't crochet it too tight.

I'd assume I'll still need to do the same washing and maintenance as those with full dreads?

thats how my dread are starting again. just couldnt remove some dreadies after a festy left my hair in knots and now i've got some dreads. i can still pull it back where no one thinks i have dreads at first until they look closer. my hair is full.
sounds like the beginning of a beautiful journey to me.

    YAY ... :cheers2:

I did mine that way to look a little more professional,If thats the route you want to take.. It is hard work, but its worth it.

I wash my bangs everyday, and my dreads and scalp every 4 days. I put my dreads in a bun and wash my bangs. If your hair isnt long enough use a shower cap. and just make sure you brush your non dreades hair, i also used rubberbands on the top of my head to make sure the bangs dont get mixed up =) even though people say rubber bands are useless. they work just fine..
