I'm not sure what forum to post this in because it really covers such a range of issues. a while back there was a long forum topic about the consentual age of sex somewhere ( correct me please if I am wrong) being lowered (to 14 ...or from 14 - 12? in Canada?? ) There are people who believe thats an acceptable age to choose. There are peopel who do not. In California 18 is the age that is the cut off. so if you have sex with a 17 year old and you are 18 for example you can be accused of statutory rape and can be posted as a sex offender for all to see. Here we have a web site "megans law website" where you can search all the registered sex offenders, see thier photos, addresses and offenses. Today in and around my community/ county and beyond there are over 2000-3000 in the least registered. this does not count the un registered offenders. One of the things I notice is that there are more homeless. These people become homeess because they cannot move within some distance from schools and finding work within range of a living situation thats not in range of schools becomes very hard and so being transient becomes an easier option for them in some way. so now we have far more registered sex offenders living on the streets photos posted...and they are transient. <--- a whole nother issue when wanting to help someone or not :/ There are a lot of offenders. even a few women in there for one reason or another. I was wondering why you think there are so many offenders? Is the system flawed..should the age of consent be lowered even in the states? What can we do to help raise our kids right so they don't become a sex offender. what in societe contributes to such a mass of sexual offense? Do you tell your kids about sex offenders? How do you do that without scaring them? Are you worried about them? What is the age of consent where you live? is it a fair age in your opinion? Should these people be on the streets or in jail? etc.
I don't know if it is relevant to your question but people are able to do inhuman things to other people because they convince themselves that the person is not part of me or mine and consequently are objectified. There is a hysteria around this issue that I feel is out of proportion to facts and is so many multiples of fear. It is not the perpetrators that they are afraid of. By and large they do not know them personally. They are afraid of the idea that it may happen to them or theirs. It is this fearful thought that drives the increasingly barbaric treatment of many individuals that need help in identifying their connection and responsibility to others.
I feel like since the crime extends far past the crime it should be treated as a larger issue and taken more seriously. For example just letting these guys kickit on the street isn't quite a good way to punish them or protect people.
I think these people were always here, maybe not in such numbers but then the population has grown more as well so the numbers might be close. With saying that yes something needs to be done but what exactly?? Years ago these types of people were realeased back into the community under supervision and silence. But now with the interenet we have info at our finger tips. We hear about some child who was abused in France, next day the US the next day somewhere else. It scared people even tho these guys were miles away, there was much more of them look they are everywhere. Scare mongering starts, things like Megans Law website good yes for the people who are turning the world to a nanny state. But then as you pointed out where do they go?? They permantly where a scarlett letter, but instead of moving on to another village and trying to start fresh maybe. But your right do we give them the benefit of the doubt that they won't offend anymore, or stay with the 1 strike policy.
I don't think the age of consent should be lowered to accomodate those that think having sex with very young kids is a good idea. Sure ,some 12 year olds have women's bodies but were playing with dolls a couple of years before that and they are not ready for sex and the responsibilities that go with it. 12-13 is pretty much when girls start to get horny and curious and that's when you have start watching them a little closer. The boys too.
megans law was started so that you know who's who. I think it's good actually. I have found it useful in buying a home...we almost purchased a home between two offenders homes ...yeah no thanks... and renting an apartment. knowing who my neighbors are. my complex wanted to place me and my son next door to a child molester no joke. NEXT DOOR. now I didnt say he'd mollest my kid but how can I be so sure what the perv is up to? It my job as a mom to be aware of safe surroundings so I found it useful. and chose a different building . Also my Uncle is on it and has been a very dangerous man with more offenses in his life then can even be known to viewers of the megans law website. for example he has 2 or 3 things on there but has probably done over 15 easily...so you never know what these guys are up to.
I think sex offenders are treated more harshly than most murder parolees and that is totally unfair to the non-violent ones.
I know in some states you can be prosecuted as a sex offender if you so much as get caught peeing in public. How fucked up is that? So now someone who got too drunk one night and decided to take a whiz in the corner of a parking garage is subject to being labeled a sex offender their entire lives. I'm all about prosecuting real sex offenders to the full extent of the law and making their lives as difficult as possible after they serve their jail time. However, some people that are labeled sex offenders are not sex offenders. I think the law is too harsh in some cases.
Some of the sex offender laws are bad law. Plain and simple. I think the whole school thing should only be applicable if the offender committed a crime against a school age child. And if it is statutory rape, then the punishment should not be so harsh. I like pragmatic law; not a one-law-fits-all cases approach. I think that sexual abuse seems to be more frequent/common than it used to be. It may be because there are more avenues to report such crimes. However, when someone is sexually abused they are more likely to become an abuser themselves; it's like the population of sex offenders increases exponentially because of this. Also, crime in general increases when societies find themselves in situations like the one we are in now. Joblessness, divide and conquer tactics of the wealthy, boredom, over-stimulation/under-stimulation...it all leads to crime.
Im just fine with them also I blame parents for the increase...too many parents just let the screwed up education system raise their children
(I'm in CA the age of consent is 18) The law needs to be smart enough to distinguish between the cases of two 16 year olds getting it on, a 30 year old teacher having sex with his 15 year old student and some guy sexing up an 8 year old. The first case is normal behavior. The second is reprehensible, but not a psychological disorder. She is a female of breeding age, he is not mentally ill. In cases like the last one, recidivism is high, cure is almost impossible. In order to effectively deal with sex offenders, we need to stop looking for a one size fits all solution.
I think that is a good point as well. A lot of laws are old and outdated with the advances of tech. Ok thats all good, I am a mother as well so yes I understand about protecting kids. But Does Megan's Law disclose what said person did?? Or does it just list them as a sex offender?? Did they just do it or have they been living there for years and have not offended and lets just say normal. But that 1 thing he/she is being judged for...... for life. For lets say a silly teenager thing she was 1 year off the legal age type thing. Is it fair to judge them on that?? I'm not defending them by any means b/c there are some freaks out there. But there are also those that murder, rob banks, deal drugs and all do the jail time and then live next door to you or me.
This is stirring up alot of emotions for me right now. I was sexually abused by a slightly older cousin for about 3 years. I waited about 12 to say anything. In his life he has established a predatory relationship pattern. Going largely for women with self esteem issues etc. He now has 7 kids by 5 different women. For the most part I've forgiven him for what he had done to me. The thing is I just talked to some family last night and it seems that he is now in Montana trying to avoid prosecution in a statutory rape case. I can just see a parade of dancing skeletons coming out of the closet. There is still a part of me that feels like I should've gutted him like a pig when I had the chance. To put an end to his pattern of suffering. I at least know that now he can't touch his own kids. But then there is another side of the equation that Mellali and Vigalante made. One third of the Homeless population of San Francisco are registered sex offenders. Most of them didn't involve children. Since SF is only 7x7 it is impossible for them to find work or a place to stay that isn't 100 feet from a School, Park, or where kids congregate. It seriously doesn't make me feel any safer knowing that. I think that the definitions of "Sex Crimes" are very broad and vague. Public Urination being called "Indecent Exposure" is one example. I remember reading a story in either the SF Weekly or the Bay Guardian about homeless sex offenders in SF and one of the guys they interviewed was a fat guy who would undo his pants when he drove. He got out of his van one night to get gas and forgot to do his pants up and his pecker fell out. He got lippy with the cop who then turned him in for indecent exposure. Now the guy has to be registered and live in his van since a part of the parole deal here is that you have to return to where you were arrested to finish out your probation. The fact is that I honestly believe that not all sex offenders are created equal. If the offense doesn't involve children then the whole school and playground thing shouldn't be on the table. megans law is open to the public to view so you can see what it says about people. it shows a small bit and a law code of what htey were convicted for. You can tell the statutory ones because its some young guy or girl etc with the other details you can kind of tell. but most of the offenders are old coots diggin on under 14 year olds...
also I agree a mostly innocent person should not be placed on such a list. the other offenses howeverI understand. indecent exposure for example ...just keep your dick in your pants! simple lol...you shouldnt be drunk in public anyways right? So my uncle has raped people and molested his kids but was only in trouble for molestation and on his record it says nothing about rape. He's liked men women boys and girls...and was from a family of abuse and sexual abuse. so say for example he only was in trouble for raping a grown woman...then he should still be able to live by a school? after all with only that knowledge we should assume hes only into grown women..but hes not...hes into everyone..see thats why they have to blanket everyone like that.
ok so what about two people who are in love say a 16 year old and a 27 year old? all these fine lines...so hard to be fair.
I firmly believe in innocent until proven guilty. That is cruel and unusual punishment to treat someone that committed a crime against an adult as if they had committed a crime against a child.
Here in Oregon they say the age of consent is 18 for both men and women, yet in 1991 in Lane County an attorney got a guy out of any type of sexual offense even though the girl was 13 at the time. How did this happen, it happened because although the state law says 18 is age of consent the lawyer made the case because of Oregon allows girls age 12 to 17 to receive an abortion without parental permission or notification. When that happens the true age of consent in any state is the age a female can receive an abortion without parental permission or notification.
