What do you think of sign spinners? Has anyone ever done it? I've heard they get paid very decently for just holding a sign. It's fun to see the spinners that are really into it and actually spinning the signs, dancing, waving to people, getting honks. I think this will attract business to whatever they're advertising. Years ago in the city I lived in, there was a young employee at the pizza place, and he was always at the corner and he created this whole character it seems while sign spinning. His sign to advertise the pizza was cut into a guitar shape and he would act like he was playing it and he wore a cape and sunglasses. People loved him. But what about the people that are just holding a sign, most likely texting on their phone, and look like they absolutely hate their life? Who would even want someone advertising their business like that? Are they really needed? It seems kind of tacky and unnecessary. I think it'd be better to just stick the sign right there in the ground. This job can't be all that bad, can it? You get to stay outside all day. You're not stuck in an office or anything. Unless it was like over 100 degrees outside. Then I'd say that would be wrong to keep anyone outside in that kind of weather. Do you think sign spinners will die off anytime soon? What will they be replaced with? When did the sign spinning craze even get started?
I know that it many cities they specifically save the sign spinner jobs for the homeless or recovering drug addicts. Would I ever do it? Never, not in a million years, not even if I was starving. I'd rather steal. There is nothing more demeaning. Sign spinners will die off and be replaced by robots or whatnot. Something more flashy. I make a point out of not frequenting establishments that have sign spinners. It feels like a desperate, disgusting form of marketing. I also like to tell sign spinners to "Go back to Africa" out of the car window.
I've only ever seen the ones who look miserable and embarrassed... half the time I seem them standing in the rain covered in plastic, or walking up and down the street in some goofy costume so they can advertise to passing cars. I had never heard that they are paid decently, though... I hope that's true. I do agree that it's demeaning and makes me think less of a business that would do that.
Yeah, I do feel bad for the ones that look miserable too but not the ones that look like they're enjoying themselves. Some people like being street performers. So I'd prefer not to see sign spinners but I guess it also creates jobs. I don't know.
well these people seem enthusiastic about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1YTGXxhXlk"]Spinners Trailer - YouTube
id do it but only if it was a mascot type costume with a big head so people wouldnt recognize me...it would be like a second hidden life...a second personality
I almost landed a job as chuck e cheese mascot when I was younger. You just reminded me of the movie 'Kabluey.' I really liked that movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzjAm1PRYhk"]KABLUEY - YouTube
I used to pass a sign spinner every day on my way to work. He was probably barely 16 years old and he would get really into it, dancing and doing his thing. It was kind of cute because he was just a young teenager but it also made me feel really awkward for him so I would divert my eyes when I passed him. Its certainly not a job I could do for basically the same reason..I would feel extremely awkward and divert my eyes from every car that passed.
In case you're not being sarcastic: it is absolutely nothing to feel envy about. Although, to be honest, we don't have sign spinners in my particular part of the country. But we have similar things. It's painful to watch, for some reason.
In San Diego, some sign spinners make $10/hr. We don't really have them in NY, but people do wear sandwich boards from time to time. Not sure what they make. A job is a job, I don't feel bad for people who are working and paying their way. Good for them. Some guys are really good at it too and can do sick tricks.
