well, i don't know about you, but i think that this is a little bit goofy.... Who seriously thinks that they could go through birth without making a peep? You're only pushing a human being out of your crotch....
I was watching the news at noon, and they did a story on this....
I don't understand why she's letting him do this to her?
And he also is against anti-depressants and apparently gave Brook Sheilds one hell of a time for taking them for PPD....I really hope this poor girl doesn't end up with that, either....

I read that the silent birth thing meant no talking and that groans and other verbalizations were allowed as long as they weren't words.

I'm sorry, but the last thing I want to see whilst pushing my kid into this world are a bunch of signs chastising me for doing what only comes natural.

If you need to moan to get through pain, MOAN. If you need to yell, YELL. If you need to sing, dance, do a jig, or try to do a somersault, DO WHAT MAKES IT FEEL BETTER! I think it's rather rude and pitiful that a MAN is telling a WOMAN how to birth a baby. WTF? He'll never be able, so how does he know how to cope.

    i read the same thing.

i've read so many contradictory things on this katie/tom thing.

if this is something she chooses to do, then so be it. a woman has a right to strive for whatever birthing experiance she wants. now, if she's forced to do this, then that's utterly absurd and i'd tell him to get the hell outta there.

they are also told to not speak to the babe for a week. THATS horrible and i really hope she doesn't allow it :(

if you ask me, groans and grunts would be more terrifying to a newborn than words.....IMO....

apparently this is his decision, not hers.....she's really gotta grow a back bone. Especially if he tries to make her not speak to the baby for a week!!!!! That's going to do a ton more harm than good!
I guess that the way they met was Tom had her flown in to meet him and he sat there all night trying to get her to convert to scientology. When she finally accepted, that was when he asked her to be with him......sounded a little creepy from the start.....wonder what the heck has been going through her head?

He must have heard somewhere that she was destined to bear the child whose soul was the reincarnation of his beloved leader....and decided himself that he should father said child...

    what a freak he is...

Cruise ain't right. I read an article somewhere that HE had decided that not only was she not "allowed" any analgesia, but that she would be silent during the birth. I haven't heard the "no talking to the baby" rule. That's horrible. Babies hear you in the womb, what are they going to think, when you don't talk to them once they are born. My babies would get all excited and happy when they heard the people they knew and saw their faces.

This Scientology stuff, I don't know.

Scientology. *scoffs* I'm sorry, but Cruise needs to try and birth a baby out of his crotch before telling a woman how to do it. :p

And not talk to your own baby? What the heck? The very first thing I did when my babies were handed to me was talk to them. I'll never forget how they were crying but as soon as they heard my voice, they just stopped, and gazed right at me, suddenly calm. It was beautiful and I'll never forget that.

I had the same experience! I think most parents do. My dh was holding my first baby, Sunshine (I had a C section, and he had the baby while they were finishing my staples up) and they brought me into the recovery room. She was looking at Bear, and I could softly hear him talking to her. I said something and she FLUNG her head around and stared at me, she was saying "HEY, I know you, you're Mama!" It was a beautiful moment. Similar things happened with all my babies, within minutes of thier births. Sage (my youngest) didn't breathe right after she was born (she was fine, she was just hanging out, looking around, sponging off the cord) but I couldn't see her, and told her "Breathe, Sage, Breathe!!!!" And she took a breathe and yelled. They want to hear us. There is something to be said about keeping the room calm, but silent isn't always what the baby wants.

And, hell, labor hurt. I yelled.

yea that whole thing just seems ridiculous to me. I read some where that Katie wasn't gonna let Tom be in the room when she gave birth but who knows. She acts like a starstruck little girl IMO. I didn't hear about the no talking to the baby for a week either but I honestly don't think any mom could do that. I hope she wakes up and realizes how silly all that is.

Once her baby is in her arms, I'm sure she'll do whatever comes natural despite the harshness around her. :)

Like I've read about so many mothers doing "guilty pleasures" surrounding their baby's care, like co-sleeping and such, despite warnings out the wazoo that its dangerous.

Mommas just instinctively know somethings. And I think that talking to baby is one of them. :D

    I hope you're right, Freek.

I wouldn't have wanted him in the room during the conception. :D LOL!

    lol, i agree!

I really hope that she comes to her sences....I could have never not talked to Leane after she was born. I don't know any mother who could do that....Leane even looked comforted to hear the dog that was such a yapper when she was in my belly. Heck, he could bark infront of her while she was sleeping, and it didn't bug her one bit! If that was so comforting, I can only imagine how important it was for her to hear mine and cody's voices.

Katie Holmes is young and young people for the most part can be manipulated very easily...especially young Midwestern girls. She grew up not far from where I did...it's a small area with NO (or VERY few) celebrities and it's certainly possible that she's starstruck. Do you think a grown woman would put up with that treatment? Why do you think Tom didn't "pick" someone his own age? Easy, young people are easy to manipulate.

As far as those people holding those signs...how much you wanna bet that it was all men holding those signs.

he's a freak with a master freak-leader napolean complex. seriously. she sounds like your standard cult recruiting victim to me. he's a true whack job. anyway, not talking to your baby? WTF?! i don't fucking think so. i sang to my babies when they came out. they loved it. and during my c-sections we carried on a steady stream of conversations. my doc said that the deliveries he had where everyone was being social and pleasant were always the easiest on mom AND the baby. good on their blood pressure, heart rate, mood. whatever. they're always the best births.

I've attended Scientologist births, and while unnessecary chatting is discouraged, mother can make noise. No load shouting and coaching. If something needs to be said, it's should be said in low, soft tones, and no negativity, like, "This doesn't seem to be working" should be "Let's try something different"

Mothers certainly do talk to the baby, but cheering and yelling, like what often happens during a hoapital coached birth, is not allowed.

that said, Tom Cruise is certifiable.........

I talked and joked all throughout my labour, and it made it so much easier than being quiet. For a while, every time that I had a contraction, all the people in the room would go quiet, which made me just focous on the pain all that much more. But when people were just talking to me like nothing was happening, it was soooooooo much easier! If one was too painful that I couldn't talk to everyone there, I told them to just keep talking and ignore what I was doing. It helped a ton.

I have no respect for Tom Cruise as a human being anymore...He is a major head case. What doese he care really....He's a millionaire many times over, so when he says that people shouldn't have to rely on medications to get them from mental depression etc....well all I can say is not everyone can afford nannies...which they will have(and afford) to live their pretentious 'HollyWood" lifestyle. I wish Tom Cruise could feel the pain of birthing a child through his penis....Would he make any noise or is he just too perfect??? He is a whack job, and should hang up his lousy acting anyhow. His fifteen minutes are up in my opinion. And poor Katie got sucked into this one.
