I like both Radiohead and Pink Floyd very much. My friend Michael allowed me to borrow "Dark Side Of the Moon", and after listening to it i realised where radiohead were influenced in their bizarre use of effects and sound effects. This is definately apparent in Radioheads later stuff such as the album "Amnesiac" and "Hail To the Thief". Also both artists make use of weird/modern cover art. And Both groups make good use of different types of instruments e.g. xylophone, synthesisers, pianos etc etc. Though out of both of them i prefer Radiohead, i haven't made up my mind why but i'm sure as time goes on i shall.
I really don't think they're alike at all. I don't see where the music press is getting this from. I suppose lyrically and thematically they share some similarities, but not really in musical terms. I've never even heard Radiohead mention Pink Floyd as one of their influences; it seems to all be coming from critics. Radiohead, as far as I know, are much more influenced by the German "Krautrock" of the 70's, encompassing such bands as Can, Faust, Neu! and Kraftwerk. If you listened to these bands, you'd see they sound much more like Radiohead than Pink Floyd does.
it seems like the similarity between radiohead and pink floyd occurred sometime around when radiohead released OK Computer. radiohead also mentions the talking heads as an influence too.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were inspired by them, seeing that their name is taken from a Talking Heads song. Musically though, they don't sound anything like them (but then again, I can't think of any groups that sound quite like the Talking Heads).
I really can't find similarities between Can and Faust (groundbreaking free-form Space Rock) or Kraftwerk (early Electronic Dance music) and Radiohead. Maybe Neu! with their experimental use of electronics could have some similarities with the OK Computer, Kid A Radiohead if you look hard enough, but then again, the same could be said about any other band that experimented with electronics, Pink Floyd included.
Well, the band has expressed being greatly influenced by Can on several occasions, and Thom Yorke has said that Can's Tago Mago was a major influence on Radiohead's Kid A album.
Oh, I'm sure they admire Can, as do most 80's and 90's musicians in Radiohead's league. But i don't find any similarities bewteen Tago Mago and Kid A. Maybe Yorke was inspired by Tago Mago, but he certainly managed to keep his originality in the making of Kid A.
Pablo Honey = Scott Walker goes Grunge, Sonic Youth The Bends = the Smiths, the Cure, maybe Elvis Costello, Leonard Cohen OK Computer = Pink Floyd Kid A/Amnesiac = Autechre Hail To The Thief = glitch. I think they have finally begun to find their own sound, though. I can see similarities between them in attitude to music and experimentalism, if not in the music itself. And I like them more since Kid A.
They are both British, but that's purely an attempt to be clever, and doesn't really discuss the myriad ways that Radiohead overlaps with, yet totally differs from Pink Floyd. I think they are two very different bands, with two different aural textures. They may overlap "politically" and "philosophically," but their sonic approaches to music do seem to be different. Pink Floyd is still pretty awesome to smoke a joint to while chilling out...I see Radiohead as less of a "stoner" band, and more of a thinking man's band. I don't think that many Pink Floyd FANATICS would agree that there is a similarity between the two bands. Both bands have challenging lyrics. Pink Floyd has a better guitarist, execution-wise, but Radiohead is challenging TODAY's musical boundaries, with their blend of of electric fuzz, feedback and elusive lyrics. Maybe they owe some of their trail-blazing or pioneering spirit to Pink Floyd, but I do see these two bands as being representative of distinctly different sounds, viewpoints and attitudes. However, some of the desperation of The Wall would fit in with the more angsty side of the Radiohead catalogue/discography. So, this is a good argument. I can't make up my mind either way...Are they stylistically linked? Sure. Are they stylistically similar? I am less convinced about this... Nice discussion, though...
Planet Telex off the Bends album was pretty much a rehashing of the intro to paperhouse from Tago Mago. other than that, I never seen much similarities between the two bands. I remember reading an article on rolling stone saying that the band themselves say they try to copy other bands sounds, but do a horrible job recreating it.
the bends is equally as good as OK Computer. There is night and day difference between the two albums though, the bends is more mellow, alterna-rock, whereas, OK Computer is more progressive.
no competition atalll. Radiohead just think that they are floyd, but will never pull it off. Don,t give up your day jobs radiohead.
I'm sorry but if you actually listened to them and got to know them a little better, you wouldn't say such bullshit about radiohead... If there is one band that doesn't want to be like another band it's radiohead. The quote from rolling stone was probably a joke, as they tend to get a bit cynical towards the press...
radiohead THINKS they are the Floyd??? I dont think that the band even thinks they are anyone. Its the fans and critics that label them as another Floyd, but that was around '98 when they recorded OK Computer. I still dont see anyone really making that comparison now.
And if YOU listened to Kraftwek, you'd realize they have more in common with Duran Duran and Visage! Influenced by Kraftwerk my ass!!!
That's because you're deaf! Listen to Pink Floyd's 'Us & Them' and if you can't hear the obvious then you're in denial about Radiohead ripping them off.
