I basically know how to make the 'body' of a skirt (as it were), but I really haven't a clue about the waistband. i don't have a sewing machine, so things can be a little time consuming, let alone delicate. I've tried a zip before but I just couldn't get it to work and there's no way I wanna use elastic because it will cut me in two. So I guess that leaves me with a drawstring which I'm find about and I know how to make the little tunnel thing to thread your string through. But how do you do the little opening where the string comes out without it all fraying like mad? Anyone any ideas about waistbands in general? Cheers guys xxxxxx
what I do for a drawstring, is fold the top over about and inch and a half to two inches, and sew all the way around it, leaving about half an inch open at the front, and that's where your drawstring will come out. To keep it from fraying, fold it over twice, that way the exposed edge is tucked safley inside :0) good luck, if you want any clarification feel free to PM me!
you have a few options. you could make a fitted skirt with an invisible waist band, which basically is the exact same shape as the first few inches of the top of your skirt. you pin it to the skirt right sides together and sew. for this, the fabric would have to be stretchy, or you would have to have a zip as for the draw string, you could zig zag stich your raw edges. and the hole for the drawstring could be done by making a button hole where you want the string to come out. It shouldnt fray
hey you could make a stretch waistband as explained above which would be the same shape as the top of the skirt...create the piece double the width that you want the waistband to be and bag it out so its neat. if you dont wana use zips why not bag out a rigid fabric waistband thats also the same shape as the top of the skirt but add a inch or two extra fabric onto one end and attach hook and eye fastenings or rouloux loops? hope this makes sense im not great at explaingin!
Fold the edges over (before sewing the whole length to make the tube) and sew it across back and forth several times.
