I saw a motorcyclist wipe out.

It was on the freeway, I pulled over, but I didn't have anything that could help so I just called 911. (lol... I guess that probably qualifies as helping) It was in the middle of nowhere in Texas, and there were no hospitals anywhere under 2 hours away.

It was sick though, (bad sick) his face was completely fucked up (no helmet) and some other people who pulled over gave him a towel to hold on it, there was blood everywhere.

Call me a pussy...but after today's events, I've decided that I'm not going to be buying a motorcycle. (I was sort of thinking about it...but not really that hard)

I live in Arizona, a state that does not make you wear a helmet. I grew up in Michigan, where they make bikers wear helmets.
I have a few biker friends from Michigan that HATE the enforced helmet law, but when they come to AZ they all wear helmets. They just hate the idea of not having a choice.
When I see people on bikes with no helmets, I cringe. Especially the young bucks on crotch rockets weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway, going 90+ mph.
If you ride a bike...please wear a helmet.

On the way to school when I was younger, some cocky motorcyclists was driving wuickly down the center of the road, as there was a ton of traffic- you're talking about 40 mph. Someone stopped to let a car out of the side street, the car pulled out and the motorcyclist when strait into the cars bonnet and was shot into the air

he went over the traffic cue and struck a street light headfirst. It was quick and looked like the guy was basically dead there after. He got up after 30 seconds or so, clearly shaken. He was wearing a helmet and it obviously saved his life.

My brother in law, was driving home from work with his coworker. and they heard this crash, they stopped and Eric was like I am not getting out of the truck that sounded like a motorcyclist. they get out and this girl was lying in a ditch. covered in blood he couldn't go over to check on her, cause it was that bad. so his friend went over and she was dead, and the boy was gasping for air, they all were drunk going 90 miles an hour. the kid did make it, he told his father you should have let me die, he is going to jail for about 20 some years well a long time, the father left the sence before the cops got their. I guess him getting away was more important then being with his almost dying kid

    things to take from this:
if you use the road, respect it, and the vehicles on it.
if you use a motorcycle, wear a helmet, by choice. also leathers, not tank tops and shorts. see a lot of that around here.

and perhaps most important, EVERYONE should carry a basic first aid kit, and have a bigger 'car kit.' they are not that expensive to buy, or you can construct your own. when every second counts remember- the cops/ emergency services are only minutes away. i am glad you had a cell phone on you, but a car kit (with gloves to keep you safe as well,) would have been a boon. you could have assessed the injuries and had gauze on hand to compress bleeding areas. everyone should know and be prepared to use first aid. you could save a life. thank you for stopping to help that guy with what you had.

my dad has three motorcycles...i wanted to get my license when i was a teenager. my dad made me watch videos of accidents just so i knew what could happen if I were to get in an accident, especially without a helmet.

we have helmet laws here...texas may not, but man if you are going to be on a highway or at high speeds 30+ mph why would you not want to wear a FULL HEAD HELMET...it just doesn't make sense to me.

i was also taught to wear hightop shoes, jeans and a jacket...even in the heat

poor guy, i hope he wears a hemet in the future, and i hope all other injuries aren't too bad especially since you were FAR from any hospital

my carkit has jumper cables and stuff of that nature, flashlights, poncho, and a car kit. BUT i couldn't tell you whats in that first aid kit, because i haven't looked.

good to see that you have decent supplies, but you should probably crack open the first aid kit too, to familiarize yourself with the items and how to use them. you wouldnt want to be reading the list of contents in the dark while someone is bleeding out in front of you. even just to know where the gloves are, you never know when you might have to deliver a baby in rapid time, they wait for no one!
having the kit is the first step, being prepared to use it is the second.
a lot of people bury their kits under the other junk in their car too, and thats a hassle if you find yourself in an emergency. under the sports gear and spare tire, and the stuff you forgot to drop off ant the thrift store is not a good place for the emergency supplies, ya know?

and then be sued out of your asshole by the family when the person dies in the hospital...or even if he survives your ass is on the line. not a good idea to touch anyone unless it is absolutely dire

as i understand it you can't be sued if you are a good Samaritan, who has knowledge, and attempts to save a life in the absence of emergency services. if you dont know cpr dont attempt it. if you dont know first aid, just give them the first aid kit, or wait for the 911 operator to tell you what to do.
and even if you do get sued, at least you tried to help. i would NEVER watch someone bleed out because of the risk of legal repercussions. i would hope that if i were in need, the people that find me try to save me. everyone should know how to save a life, so that they can attempt to save a life in good faith of their skills. in most crowds youll be lucky to find a handful of people who now the heimlich maneuver, let alone CPR. proper use of a tourniquet? could save your life. improper use? permanent damage. so you have to KNOW what you are doing to avoid getting sued, or have the defense to get out from under it.you could break a rib doing CPR. im not saying perform field surgery, but i dont consider legal risks a reason to watch/ let someone die.

im just saying that i wouldnt try to patch up some dude's open wounds when i could be doing more harm than good.

most paramedics would agree that you should leave them alone until they get there... unless you are qualified to help them.

definitely better to 'do no harm' but i guess my issue is that more people are not qualified. when my son died i started cpr before i remembered to call 911. granted i was by myself, but if someone is not breathing then the longer you wait the more dead they get. I just wish more people had more skills, and they should be taught in school, to everyone. just knowing when not to remove an object from a wound (say, screwdriver embedded in leg) could save a life. knowledge is power, but its not a respected power, and it should be.

Horror stories like this are why I'd never want to own a motorcycle. Too much potential bad shit could happen.

I used to want a bike, till I saw a bunch of horrible accidents.
The worst was a guy on a bike in the left lane passing a SUV in the rite lane who decided to make a left turn. The SUV hit him and his leg got ripped off by the stupid brush gaurd. It was stuck in it when the SUV stopped. The guy on the bike skid like 1/4 mile down the rd. There was a huge trail of blood and chunks of skin and stuff down the road and the guy was tore up. Luckily the cops were there within a min. He was barley alive when EMS got there, I heard he died later.
Another time I had a bike try to change lanes and crash into the boat I was towing. Luckily the guy had a helmet, jacket and pants. He got rite up with the only damage being to his bike.
People cant drive, I have enough close calls in a car. A bike is harder to see and has no protection.

As far as the med kit and everything, I keep one on me but I have no proper training. I wouldent want to use it on anyone else. Id give it to them to use or to someone who knows what they are doing. I say that now, but if it comes down to it I dont know what Id do,Id feel like I have to so something.
I had been at a red light when the girl infront of me started having a seizure or something. A few people got out to help and her car was all locked. We were on the phone with 911 and she stoped breathing. Someone there was trained and knew cpr. 911 said if we were comftorable with it to break the window and do CPR. Thats what we did. The guy got the girl breathing again and probably saved her life since EMS took a while to get there. Later the girl sued the guy for her broken window.
