that all hippies have to smoke. i consider myself a hippy..always have and always will. i smoke hookah but never have done anything else, i will eventually smoke weed once in a while in the future but just not my thing right now.. so anyways these 2 people asked me if i smoked weed or do drugs of any kind and i said no. they ended up telling me that that means im not a "real" hippy. does this bother anyone else besides me??? its all about the spirit, not the weed. altho it may help sometimes.
don't worry about it. you're doing your own thing, whether that makes you a hippie or not isn't really important. you can be into the music, the peace, the everything and all that makes you is a cool person. don't worry about what to call it. but it's good that you're not doing something just because you feel like it would go along with your lifestyle. it's been said so many times but i'll say again that the people who matter won't say stupid things like that.
I don't smoke at all...hell, these days I don't really do much of anything 'like that'. I don't go around telling everyone what a hippie I am either, but I look the part and have the mindset(for the most part)...so I'm forever being asked for pot or solicited to buy some, etc. I just tell people it's not my thing - and despite a surprisingly large amount of folks being REALLY FREAKED OUT by that for some reason, it helps me find a lot of really cool, genuine folks too.
I think ppl put too much into labels. I have a history of long hair, smoking dope, dropping acid, living in communes and crash pads, fucking runaway chicks there, working sporadically at odd jobs (including light dealing) and all the other images of the early '70s that one would label "Hippie." However, I don't recall actually refering or thinking of myself as that label. I was just doing my thing, much of it exploring alternative lifestyle and getting back to nature. Others gave the label and it seemed to fit so I didn't protest. Now I work 8 to 4 at a steady job I've held for a decade, have a close cropped hair and beard and do not do drugs at all except the occasional wine or beer and I do not get drunk. Altho I still strive for a simpler lifestyle and many of the values that came about in the '70s. I still wear cutoff shorts because they are comfortable for me. (Never think about it unless I see some other old fart in 'em and then the fact that only a couple of us on all of Miami Beach wear them and they are 40 years out of style hits me. But, I don't care - still travel to the beat of my own drummer.) I still advocate free-luv, go to the nude beach often, try not to judge ppl on their quirks and have spiritual beliefs that bounce around from atheist to pantheist. I guess I have the label "Former Hippie" now.
You're not a really hippie if you don't smoke marijuana and haven't tried opium and PCP at least once. Period.
Hello there. I should start by saying that yes, I'm new (having only discovered this site recently while searching out some good books about activism) and, yes, I'm young. I'll even say that I don't consider myself to be a hippie, I simply don't live that life, and I don't think anyone who knows me would label me under that title either, expect when joking around. However, I would and do consider myself a feminist and being someone who is unafraid of taking that title, I know a lot of what it's like to have stereotypes thrown at you simply because of your label. The best you can do is reach out and educate, make it harder for people to continue to leave their ignorance and assumptions unquestioned. You will certainly not change every mind, you may not even change most minds, but trust me, sometimes seeing that one mind change can give you more hope for the world than any high will ever supply. With that in mind, I'm surprised by this idea that you shouldn't claim a title unless you are ready to accept all stereotypes and associations. In this case, I don't think it's necessarily a bad stereotype but I still don't believe this idea that one should simply accept and conform to ignorance of thought. Why should a person be forced to choose between a culture they may feel attached to and a stereotype they may not fit? There are other options than conforming, you know. Indeed, I am not entirely up on proper hippie code, if there is such a thing, but one would think there would be more value to opening a person's mind to the diversity of hippies and people in general rather than give up and give in to the mainstream definition.
BSR I know your joking. Pcp an Opium or your not a hippy? I think if this was true heroin would be a more "known" d.o.c. for hippies. Like acid an weed?
you know what pisses me off, people how call themselves hippies. What started as a counter culture has in itself become a "culture" . By labeling yourself a hippy, aren't you going against the philosophy and mindset.
