I can understand the upset at horse meat being snuck in to a so called beef product. But is horse meat really so bad? Is it harmful to humans at all? I have no idea but I don't imagine it is.

I'd certainly give it a go - If they animal was treated right and killed humanely I wouldn't have a problem with it. And if it tasted good of course!

There's so much demand for poultry and beef that the conditions these animals are kept in is often rather atrocious. I think I'd be more inclined to dine on a well looked after horse than some deformed battery hen.

Probably a pretty penny in store too for the first company to land a celebrity chef promoting their tasty, healthy hoof soup.

    I say legalize horse meat.
It would solve the problem we're having provincially with having to put down race horses because the industry is tanking.

I find it odd when companies use horse for beef fill though. You would think horse would be a lot more expensive than beef.

I wondered the same, but there's been something flying around about the meat itself carrying something in it that can cause illness. It's been a week or two since I heard about it so don't take my word as gospel on that. Otherwise, hell, I'd try horse meat. I've tried shark and ostrich before.

There's nothing illegal about horsemeat, Hecubus.

The main problem with horse meat is that if the source is not strictly controlled (and inevitably, if it is being snuck into products that aren't meant to have it, then the source is not controlled) then there is a danger of contamination with bute - a widely used veterinary painkiller which can be carcinogenic to humans. Vets can only prescribe it if the animal's identity document is endorsed to say that the animal is not intended for the human food chain.

I somehow doubt that anybody checked the horsemeat going into Findus lasagne to ensure it was bute-free.

And no, horse meat is NOT more expensive than beef. Unwanted horses which sell for "meat money" can sell for as little as £5 at the sales ...

I had a kangaroo burger at Glastonbury Festival. Or was it Leeds... Ha, probably Leeds! It was good though.

Ah yes, the bute - I had heard about that. Doesn't sound very tasty. If it were legalised in the UK there could still be trade on the black market for horse meat with added ketamine. A lot of humans feel alright about that particular drug!

It seems to be popular in France. Often horses sold at auction in the states are shipped there to be eaten.

Right on. Some creatures should never be eaten. I'm still mourning the loss of Mr. Ed.

Who could eat the whole thing.... I have no intention to eat horse meat but if I had to survive I can't say that I wouldn't. I am sure I could find or hunt other game before eating a horse.

The issue is with processed meat, contamination and labelling. Much of the UK population would rather pop a frozen meal in the oven rather than make from fresh. Therefore the possibility that other things are in the meal rather than specified on the package has caused fear.

However, yes I'd eat horse meat if it was from a decent source and ethically farmed :)

To be honest, i own a Horse and would never dream of eating one, they have too much personality, it would be like committing cannibalism.

I'd eat one. I think it's the national meat of France.
