I have been inspired to take the dread-ful journey ZING!
But really you guys have inspired me to go natural seeings pictures of everyones dreads oh dear I cant explain it..... they just make me happy

So after back tracking heaps through this reading through loads of posts I am pretty close to having everything down pat. The plan is this friday im going into the city to pick up some Dr.Bronners or if they have none get some clarifying shampoo.

My hmm... shall we say "things which are good"
    -Stay natural
    -Residue Free
    -Cotton Beanies/Tams etc
    -Beads; seperate stubborn ones
-Salt Sprays (im a surfer and summers coming up so :D)
    -Dry thorouly, dont want mold
-Don't play with them to much

If I have done something wrong their please tell me... and things to add are sweet also

A couple of things im unsure about
    1. After going surfing should I rinse out the salt to avoid dandruff and the itchies
    2. I tend to twiddle with my hair alot... and its going to be a real stuggle to avoid doing that, how did you guys over come it?

Any Suggestions or words of inspiration would be greatly appreciated
.. soon ill hopefully have little red head dreadlets which I can nurture to good health and eventually anchor boats to the dock

    From that friendly fellow, Josh

    Yeh you got it.

About the rinsing, i dunno, I'd say it would probably be better if you could rinse after your sessions...mainly cause the smell could get pretty funky once you have locks, but on the other hand i dont think it matters that much, there are loads of people with awesome dreads living a carefree lifestyle who don't do shit to their dreads and nothing bad happens. but still, lots of people here have written that it's advised...gonna need confirmation though.

Playing with them...dont see how that's bad (is this what you mean by twiddle too? never heard of the word before) i play with mine alot and it also came as a habit since i was a little kid...soaringeagle always says that his locks are 99% natural and 1% playing with them for an example and well...just don't set too many rules for yourself, stay true to the freedom they represent and just let them be and keep in mind that it's a long process and just...patience does the trick. applying logical thinking helps too..you dont want to put any crap in them etc

lol by twiddle I tend to run my fingers though my hair quite a bit, which will pretty much ruin any progress I make.
and in chemistry we learn't a bit about salts and how they can be corrosive. Was curious if they will eat my dreadlocks from the inside out because that would be disapointing.

    :D

I play with my hair all the time... and other than it being a really annoying habit, I wouldn't worry about refraining from playing with your hair just because you're growing dreads. Just live your life and the dreads will happen.

just switch your twiddle habit from running your hand through it to playing with separate strands as they start to separate themselves!

you live in australia... goddamn i want to be there so bad... lol! :) but yeah, i second rinsing after surfing in the sea... while i have left sea salt sprays in for several days, i just sprayed it on, i didn't saturate, and it didn't have all the kelp and other marine stuff going on that sea water does, lol! i would think it would start to smell kinda raunchy and fishy after a few days if you didn't rinse! :) you could let it dry first and then rinse it if you want, that might help with the locking process, but yeah... i wouldn't let it too long!

also, when i'm laying in bed, i like to put my head against the pillow in different positions and just rub around a lot... it helps make knots. lol, my loverman wakes up with a dreaded mat on the back of his head every morning and then combs it out. i keep telling him to just leave it and let his hair dread like it wants to, but he likes to look a little more "cleancut" whatever that means! :)

good luck... oh, and post us a "beginning" picture too, so we can see what it looks like and follow the pictorial journey with you!

Australia is alright I guess... for the beach, but other then that it red dirt and emus y'know.Good point with the whole sea water thing. I'd wash my hair after a couple of days and a little penguin would fall out eeep!.. but then again I have always wanted a penguin.

On a serious note tomorrow illl steal my sisters camera and snap a couple action shots. I have convinced my mate to get some natural ones with me and hes all "HOLY SMOKES LETS DO IT!"
so ill also try snap some of his hair too

on a side note I ussually got nuttas at my hair when towel drying it.. however last night I let it air dry and I had small curls going, I never knew I had curls! Woooah

    catchya around bye!

WINNER a dread penguin.. he would be such a trendy penguin. The other penguins would be mighty jelous. I'd call him Gilbert or Alf

and leland isnt exactly a penguin..... but I'd imagine he would be a cutie anyway.

Well im gonna go hit up the spa for a couple of hours
