do you guys have any suggestions for a sore throat? any brand of medications that worked particuarly well?

strepsils worked really well for my last sore throat, but I couldnt' find any when I went to the pharmacy this time. Swallowing currently hurts so I'm not sure how good of an idea throat lozenges are, but we'll see :)

A while back I was looking up something regarding natural remedies, and I saw on a few websites that taking a tablespoon of honey as needed will help sooth a sore throat. I tried it about a week ago when I had a sore throat, and it helped. I'm not saying that I felt fan-freaking-tastic, but it was better. ;)

i got these suggestions off of a website that i like

[IMG]Take echinacea this herb it’s antiviral and antibacterial, speeds healing, boost the immune system.

[IMG]Horseradish is another herb that many use in the kitchen but it also has excellent properties to treat sore throat and upper respiratory tract infections, reduces fever, and expels concentrations of mucus.

[IMG]Use kava kava as a gargle for soothing and analgesic pain relief. Helps insomnia cause by coughing and sore throat. [IMG]Myrrh is an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, very powerful and excellent for a chronic sore throat. It acts also as an expectorant and decongestant. It helps cure gum disease.

When I had strep throat last, I took extra strength ibuprofin, and it worked well. If it's that sort of sore throat, that might work. Try the natural stuff first!

I drink lots of tea, sometimes with honey, lots of water, Kool-Aid is nice, too. :) If it's caused by sinus issues (post nasal drip) a hot shower will help some maybe. Hot shower will also work if it caused by the heating system in your home...the steam will provide some relief from the dryness. :)

Honey is good. You could also try gargling with baking soda. Then again, if you do everything we've suggested, you won't be able to feel it for weeks. Is it sore, or irritated and inducing mass swallowing?

Another thing you can do if it's caused by sinus issues is use a neti pot. There's a thread about it somewhere in this forum. I've used it on the onset of a sore throat before bed and it prevented it from manifesting. And I think it would help speed up the healing process too. Gargling with warm-hot salt water helps too. If you're looking to take the medication route, the only thing I can really recommend is Vick's Chloraseptic spray. I don't know how good it is for you, but it numbs the throat a bit and is soothing; a temporary godsend for a painful sore throat.

slippery elm tea (they make lozenges too, but very expensive. i havent tried them)

    salt water gargles

    push fluids

eat no sugar, really limit any starches. sugar keeps the immune system from working properly. and i think it goes without saying to stay away from any of the pseudofoods out there. only eat food that looks like it did when it was growing, etc... if you dont nourish your body, it's going to be much more difficult for it to heal itself.
