Hey all, I want to give painting a shot. I have been drawing ever since I can remember, so I've got something to work with. I was wondering was sorts of things to buy to paint on, paint with and so on. I like whatever kind of paint that was used on InSearchOfMore's paintings. I really am excited about trying this. Thanks for any help.
slammon420... hey bro, According to your astrology, August 22..."The Day Of Seasoned Experience", you were virtually born to be an artist. So you are going to get really, really good at this pursuit, i am certain. Wait til you read what your birthday energy is about, it will amaze you. I will share more of this if you ask, at the moment i have to go to the dentist.....but i am also an artist that started working with oils at around 12 and 37 years later, i'm still at it...it's a life time passion. i will share some more techniques n' stuff soon. ~ otter
those are fantastic, they're all oil? i've only used watercolor and acrylic myself, and am pretty comfortable with watercolor, but would love to use something with a little more precision.. you seem to give a great light sunny feeling (as is commonly achieved through watercolor) with oils... are they difficult to work with? what kinds of paper do you use? i'm curious
i was commenting on your "birthday energy" and "virtually born to be an artist" you tree huggin hippie, you oils are pretty good though not very diverse.
hey tigerlily thanks.. yeah, they're all oil on stretced canvas, 36x48. Like i was tellin' slammin420, it's taken me most of my life to get that technically proficient....i got into the botanicals in my 30's, and they sell really well for many thousands...but i'm into a bunch of new stuff now...lots of hindu goddesses & images of the universe, animals etc, lots of golds and metallics etc. Just getting started with a few done in stages.. i'll have to post some shots soon... anyway, .... it just takes layers and layers of delicate thinnned layers with mediums to get that luminous effect. It is also absolutely mandatory to start with a kick-ass image to work from. I take most of my own shots. I lived up in Prescott, Arizona where i got alot of the amazing desert flora. Photoshop helps to amp up colors etc. and give idea's in the prelimainary stages, but mostly i just try to capture the spirit of the plant....i am somewhat of a perfectionist and i don't hesitate to scrape something off if it doesn't work and start again. that is the beauty of oils, they are not so unforgiving and demanding like watercolors! But as for the lifelike light effects, it really is a process of adding thin medium layers and manipulating them with turpintine and soft brushes. Slammin' i hope you are reading this. Anyway, the word painting does contain the word PAIN for a reason! I learned along time ago to detach from the process and not get all freaked out about what the painting was doing or looked like in process, but to just let it evolve. & unfortunately there are no shortcuts! Believe me i have tried! Usually spend about a month of steady work per canvas. I use alot of mediums, like grumbacher medium III and another great product called Walnut Alkyd medium from M. Graham & co. Even tho i haven't posted much here for some strange reason, i really care about those young artists out there like slammin420 who are just getting started, and to all of you really doin' your thing to create! When i was 12 i had a great artist show me about two things about using oils , and then i had horrible art teachers in high school, didn't take art in college, and just taught myself through trial and error. And i had to learn how to buy paints and materials first, instead of shoes n' stuff!
Rasputin...., ok, yeah, well i know what i am talkin' about when it comes to Astrology! You are entitled to your opinion, it's cool. But please don't call me names, that makes you look bad.( May 9 people also have temper and anger problems incidentally, but it really is about being a protestor or reformer, rooting for the underdog. Lovers of beauty and artistic sense, "their great challenge is one of self-control, essential for their success in the world" ) And yes, i agree, i love diversity too, so that's why i am doing other subjects now. I have made good money with these, about 70 grand so far.......not that much, but it helps. (i need to work more.) Ok, who else has some good advice for Slammin420???
my advice would be to forget about painting faces to begin with (unless your going for a francis bacon style) because its easy to spoil your painting when st peter looks like a acne covered crack addict whos been set on fire.
:$ Hey! What the hell is your problem? You mess with her you going to have to mess with the pissed off MAMA here!Shut your trap, and keep it that way! You have nothing nice to say than say noth'n at all! Please Lets Have Peace&Love&Harmony:H
i said her oils were "pretty good" dumbass which in my opinion is a positive comment. if you didnt notice this is a art forum which kinda involves praise and critisism, its part of the buisness im afraid. can you actually make me shut my trap or are you just trying to be a "good friend"? What did you think you was going to achive with your post? a grovelling apology maybe, because i get kinda scared when 21 year old females from america threaten me, it make me want to go to my local vicar and ask god to protect me from the big blue letters. i hope we can live in peace&love&harmony because my world would end if we couldnt.
but ras baby, you didn't attack my art, you attacked my thoughts about his birthday energy, which you don't understand, so you chose to call me a negative thing. (oh my!) now, it looks like you are over there in dreary grey england, and prolly not doing too much art work, so why don't you just chillax, go to a tanning place, get some sun rays and do some art, and then post it so we can help slammin420 be inspired in his young art lovin' life, ok? ps. people really do care about each other on this forum, it's the way we tree huggin' hippies live....and i am all about forgiveness, so don't stress. it's ok. Just do some art and share it. Slammin420, whatsup bro?
dont you think your being a bit stereotypical about england you stupid lard munching hillbilly vote the idiot back in cousin fucker?
you have a mental problem son, and i suggest you get professional help.( just saying that with love of course. )Slammin420 i am really sorry this thread has gotten so messed up. my apologies...never meant for this to happen.
im sorry, art fucks me up. i hate modern artists so much it makes me want to damage future artists belief in themselves so they dont create more hype about the shit being produced at the moment. Id kill every modern artist for carvaggio to be reborn.
ok, now we can all relax and get back to the young man that started this thread. rasputin, you can pm me and we can figure stuff out that may help you with that issue. ps. i did not vote for bush btw!!! and also, in response to your hillbilly comment, i am not saying this to sound pretentious, but i happen to be the grandaughter of a Romanian Royal family member, my mother's father Michael.(cousin of Queen Marie.) And french nobility that dates back to the 6th century on my fathers side, for whatever good it does me now... Maybe that's why i am a psychic astologer..lol
wow...interesting. well, i've been away so i haven't been able to reply to all of this. those are some really nice paintings though. i personally don't think you're a crazy bitch or whatever he said. as far as i'm concerned, this astrology stuff is obviously to my advantage, so it won't hurt anything. i know i like watercolors and i like your paintings so i guess i like oil too! i'm asking my grandmother for some supplies for christmas, what should i ask for...is there diff. types of canvas that you prefer, what type/brand of paints do you prefer, what sorts of brushes or whatever. thanks alot everyone.
