Aliens almost certainly exist but humans should avoid making contact, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned.

In a series for the Discovery Channel the renowned astrophysicist said it was "perfectly rational" to assume intelligent life exists elsewhere.

But he warned that aliens might simply raid Earth for resources, then move on.

"If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans," he said.

Prof Hawking thinks that, rather than actively trying to communicate with extra-terrestrials, humans should do everything possible to avoid contact.

He explained: "We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet."

The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like
    Stephen Hawking

In the past probes have been sent into space with engravings of human on board and diagrams showing the location of our planet.

Radio beams have been fired into space in the hope of reaching alien civilizations.

Prof Hawking said: "To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational.

"The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like."

The programme envisages numerous alien species including two-legged herbivores and yellow, lizard-like predators.

But Prof Hawking conceded most life elsewhere in the universe is likely to consist of simple microbes.

In the recent BBC series Wonders of the Solar System, Professor Brian Cox, a physicist from the University of Manchester, also suggested life may exist elsewhere within our solar system.

He said organisms could be present under the ice sheet that envelops Europa, one of Jupiter's moons.

Professor Cox added: "Closer to home, the evidence that life could exist on Mars is growing.

"We will only know for sure when the next generation of spacecraft, fine-tuned to search for life, are launched to the moons of Jupiter and the arid plains of Mars in the coming decades."

I watched some of his special about Extraterrestrial life...He's just a rich and smart nerd who bought a slot on television for him to detail his own fantasy, and his own ideas on what extra terrestrial life would be. He even went as far as to tell a fictional account of HIM being the representative from earth to meet the extraterrestrials.

I'm fucking joking, dumbass, obviously I knew something was wrong with him, I did not know specifically lou gerhigs (btw thanks for the spelling on that one), it was a HIGHLY irrelevant use of a general word in the disrespectful manner it is supposed to be used.

Just the idea that we'd send someone not of usual physical capabilities to represent the human form is pretty funny. And yes he is incredibly smart, no one denies that. Obviously you can't say he's the smartest. And still I think it was a little show for him to showcase his fantasy, which I don't doubt is highly influenced by physical knowledge.

Why don't you step out of yourself before you start farting on the nay sayer. No one is here to devalue the worth of Stephen Hawking. To our origin he is of the same worth as anyone else.

Don't mistake my detachment, and the others' decision to evaluate from within their own personally possessed perspectives and ideas for something that is not, something only by a few's definitions. Plus if I was what you want to think, wouldn't addressing it fulfill my purpose?

    Continue with your evaluations.....

If aleins were able to either bend the laws of physics that we know of, it stands to reason they may have found away around the need for fossil fuels or any other resources are planet has to offer.

    Think dyson sphere for example.

Then again who knows, I would love to lead the rebbelion against the alein nazis!

There's plenty of evidence that aliens have already visited us, or at least are well aware of us. If so, then how exactly do we go about avoiding them?
