C'mon guys - let's kick this thing off the planet. It is indefensible and it will only take enough of us to make a hell of a noise. I don't think I can live on a planet that kills babies of any kind...help please! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/370512755 Nearly 1 million baby seals will be clubbed or shot to death in Canada in just three years. Shockingly, the hunt is subsidized by the Canadian government! Every winter, Northwest Atlantic harp seals migrate to Eastern Canada to give birth and mate. Following their birth in late winter, mothers leave in search of mates, while the pups remain helpless and vulnerable on the ice until they can swim and catch their own food. It’s during this time when they are most vulnerable that they are mercilessly slaughtered for their pelts! Hunters armed with clubs and rifles will bludgeon to death hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals. About 96% of the seals killed will be less than three months old and more than 40% may be skinned alive! Canada's seal hunt is the largest deliberate slaughter of marine mammals in the world. But the killing of baby seals doesn't make sense economically or ecologically, nor is it sustainable. It's simply a tragic slaughter of defenseless animals that benefits a small minority of boat captains armed with big ships, snowmobiles and even personal helicopters. This isn't about small town survival or tradition, it's an industrial killing machine for profit. But Canada wants the media and public to believe that no one cares about the innocent blood spilled each year across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This year's hunt will continue until the industry reaches its quota of 319,500 seals. That's why we must raise a public outcry. Please tell the Canadian government that you do care and that this practice is unacceptable. We must show the Canadian Parliament that the rest of the world will no longer stand for this cruel and senseless hunt!
Seems that every time this barbaric, and totally unnecessary torture gets too much bad press and is stopped......it always comes back to life, like a ghoulish nightmare that you can't seem to kill. I commend you Goddess Om, this topic is one I have followed for a long time. Paul Watson has fought it with everything he could, risking his life, getting arrested, and losing his ship to the Can. Gov. All the price of trying to stop the Seal Pup Skinning. The actual hunters make very little money on each skin, so they have to be quick. What this means is that often the skin is removed and the hunter moves on to the next one.....while the pup is still living, in obvious agony....... One hunter actually skinned a pup alive on purpose, while smiling broadly, right in front of Paul Watson, just to bug him. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is Watson's conservation action organization. 'Ocean Warrior', by Captain Watson, and 'Sea Shepherd' by Warren Rogers are two good books to read if you want to learn the history of his fight to save these baby seals from such a cruel fate.
I know what you mean - just when you think there has been a victory it rises from the grave like a monster. But you know what...we just have to keep at them and at them. I need a few names and email address (or postal ones) for the Canadian Ministers who are involved in the sanction of this horrific and barbaric kill. I want real names and I think we should write real letters. I need names of newspapers I can write to...letters to the editor or something...Can any Canadians help me please? This is gonna be personal. And if I can't get there in the flesh then I will shove it in their face any way I can. We should shame them into stopping it if nothing else. If I wasn't a pacifist I'd say "hand me a machete and a plane ticket" but turning into them won't help. We need plenty of loud voices and we need to take it to the streets. I am going to print up my own petition and get it signed in shopping centres. I won't stop until its done.
One tactic that has worked in the past is to raise awareness of the shameful hunt in the countries where the fur is bought, eliminating the market for it. No demand = no hunt. Sadly, I saw a fashion article that said seal fur is 'in' this year........how about that, huh? You go girl!
And what about the countries who buy the seal genitalia for "god knows what"? (I'd like to have a go at THEIR genitalia...I really would)... However...I have to continue to express my power responsibly and tone down the Warrior within, but I'd make a good revolutionary - I'd die for the cause, no problem! I won't stop - I made a vow to myself and to Mother Earth. Even if its 'just me". But it would be much quicker if I could recruit an army of rainbow warriors to help get the job done!
Paul Watson, " I fully expect to be killed one day by one of my own species, a whaler, sealer, poacher...." I love this response Paul made one day in Stanley Park, Vancouver, to a stranger's fingerwagging reprimand that sinking whaling ships was criminal, despicable, unforgivable, etc. 'John, what makes you think that your opinion means anything to me? Do you think I should have asked? Gee, I wonder what John will think if we sink some illegal whaling ships? John, let me tell you something, we sank those ships for the whales. Not for you, and not for any other G..D... human being on the face of the earth.' He goes on, and raises his voice as he does, and John runs away. lol
It is funny how a lot of other animals (humans included) get abused, but their abuse never make headlines, or incite any activism whatsoever... but why does everybody complain about the plight of the baby seals? The reason: they are so darn freakin' cute..... eh, this only proves that most animal rights activists are irrational sentimentalists.
than a gleeful, malicious, irrational, sociopathic baby butcher. imho BTW, The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has acted in the defense of porpoises, dolphins, grey whales, sperm whales, and those ever so cute lil codfish.
Actually, I work with Amnesty and others to stop human torture as well. And I do think it is about time people learned compassion for all life forms. Is it too much of a stretch of the imagination to understand that other humans and animals feel pain and fear? Or are they all too zoned out, zombified and apathetic to get out of their pathetic little worlds and feel something...and do something... This disgusts me...yeah, seals are cute...they are also sentient beings and anything that can't protect itself from abuse should be protected from the barbaric actions of mindless morons...including the Canadian government ones.
yeah, true, animals feel fear and pain... but do they contribute to the society as much as humans do? If certain human causes can be advanced by the sacrifice of a few animals, why not do so?
What sort of 'human cause' do you think justifies torture of innocent animals or people? Or even "guilty" ones? er...no, of course they don't "contribute to society"...they are just Nature itself...but then I'm sure some people think we can live without it... Then we have those humans who "really" contribute to society. They log ancient forests for woodchip...they kill species to extinction...they bomb their own citizens...they arm themselves to the hilt then insist every other country in the world has to be disarmed...they nuke Hiroshima...they bomb Afghanistan...they dupe their own citizens by illegally tampering with votes...they torture prisoners (after attacking a so-called dictator who dared to do the same thing)...need I go on?
One of the people who signed the petition wrote: "How would you feel if monsters came and skinned your babies alive while you and your wife were out shopping?"
That is just a projection of human emotionality into non-human subjects. Seals don't have the depth of thought that humans do, or the full range emotionality humans experience.
War are torture are cost of civilization. Seals do not create civilization, and therefore they don't have to pay the cost. But all the positive returns from the advancement of human technology, society and political system are well worth the cost.
through behaviorial studies of seals, through thr studies of their anatomical faculties for reason and emotionality... and in many other ways.
If you get to live in this "civilised world" devoid of compassion, freedom and justice...well, I am sure you will be paying the cost one way or another...good luck to you
So you have studied the subject then? Perhaps you'd like to know that studies have also been done showing that even plants react in ways much like human emotions. If the pot plant in your house can feel and react, then I am damn sure a seal can.
