Yo all. I have been meditating for about a couple of months now, and apart from the stuff I expect to see (less irritable, more focused, etc.) I have noticed something else when I meditate. Actually, a couple of things. The first is this bizzare pressure in the middle of my forehead. Its not painful or anything, just this pressure above my eyes.

The second, well, I noticed this tingling feeling in my hands. I thought "this is new" so I meditated longer than usual, and pretty soon I became aware it was my heartbeat! As I kept on going I found that this rhythmic beat spread to other parts of my body. Sadly, it was cut short before it could progress further, as I had a train to catch.

My question is, this pressure and heartbeat things, are they normal? What do they mean/what are they?

    Thanks everyone, :peace:.

The pressure at your forehead is probably your third eye chakra stirring to life. I feel this also. It's a good thing. I usually meditate lying down and put a Herkimer diamond on my third eye. Amethyst works well also. You have energy centers or chakras at seven points along the spine, from the end of the spine to the top of the head at base, sex organs, navel, heart, throat, third eye, and crown of head. You also have them at the palms of your hands and bottom of your feet. It's not unusual to develop feeling at these points as well as energy flow in and out of these energy centers. By practicing using these feelings you can learn to feel energy flow and manipulate it with your hands. You may want to read up on it a little bit to develop some knowledge about it as you go along.

Thank you for the detailed reply! I intend to try for a while longer to see if I can get the heartbeat thing to come back. I haven't mediated much since then, 'cept 5 mins here and there, because everything has been so hectic lately.

See if you can feel the pulse in your solar plexus

    deep breath in belly out
    deep breath out belly in

get your belly in this rhythmic orbit cycle
and see if you can feel your pulse down there

As a general rule it's not a good idea to get too hung up on having stuff happen or trying to recreate a feeling/experience. You can do specific techniques that are designed to elicit a certain experience or guide yourself in a certain direction as stalk mentioned above. When just meditating, though, be open to whatever happens even if it is nothing. Don't expect, observe. Use your intention for higher purposes, such as higher consciousness, more awareness/clarity, or being more loving/compassionate. Be as consistent as you can in your practice, as twice a day for 5 minutes is probably better than 2 hours once a week. Just, please, don't quit whatever happens.

pressure in forehead comes from incorrect concentration on or against thoughts - relax attention when this occurs or lay down for a minute

heartbeat moving body is a product of stillness coupled with noticable blood pressure

Don't worry about it. Meditation means awareness. You are just becoming aware of things you normally don't pay attention to. These things are natural and called life. Enjoy it :)

Thank you for all the replies everyone! I have on more question if you do not mind.

Is it okay to listen to music while meditating? I usually just listen to relaxing music for five minutes just to calm me down, and then properly meditate, but sometimes I go all the way with the music.

Yes, music is fine. There are some enlightened people out there that create music especially to meditate with that deepen the practice. I know some advocate having a period of quiet after a noisy portion (drumming, chanting, dancing, mantra repetition, etc.) to let it soak in, but I haven't heard that particularly associated with music, so I'm not sure. It definitely wouldn't hurt, but I'm not sure if it would be considered advisable or necessary. If you haven't tried brain entrainment, that's a good way to get your brain down into the alpha or theta wavelengths prior to meditation. Do a web search for binaural audio. There's some free stuff out there as well as a slew of pay-for CDs.

I think it's easier to focus my thoughts with music because you can just let it absorb you...

i generally meditate to music most of the time (anything from ambient to my fav songs lol...) but if you can i would use the music to help u focus and start then go without it

    best of luck
