Thanks for making me smile. Of course, as an American I think of something completely different when someone mentions suspenders.

In the USA, suspenders are something you might wear to keep your pants up. If I'm not mistaken, people in other parts of the world call them "braces." In the USA, braces are something worn by (usually young) people to straighten their teeth. It's a confusing language.

ohhh now i know what you're talking about... the "suspenders" on the GI Joe are called garters or shirt-stays here in the US... suspenders attatch to your belt/pants and go over your shoulders to attatch to the other side like this :

that's right in the uk/auz/nz world of english vocabulary suspenders are something a woman wears to hold up her stockings, or in this case 'his stockings', and braces are for straightening teeth or holding up your pants (as in tigerlily's snap), or a building, probably lots more meanings as well: 'brace yourself' for instance. the difference esp between us-commonwealth meanings is quite wide i think. some us threads are a complete mystery to me b/c of the language which i've never heard used that way be4, or unfamiliar words and expressions. one that recently puzzled me was 'i could care less'. it's always been 'i couldn't care less' over here and the first few times i saw it i thought they were taking the piss. there's one you won't know either 'taking the piss'.

Hmm, i'd say in Nz that braces are for teeth, suspenders are for clothes (stockings, pants, etc)
