Hey everyone! I was just wondering what everyone thought about synthetic dreads. I'd never heard of them before but I came across this website the other day http://quinnster.fqdn.net/ and I thought they were pretty interesting. I've always liked the dready look but wasn't really sure if I wanted to do it to my hair, so I thought that maybe I could try this first to see what they would look like on me. Has anyone every done these/heard of these or know how safe they are?

Never done extensions really. But I've heard they get annoying because they pull on your scalp (the really heavy synthetics made from fake hair) and it begins to itch and ache. But after a while you get used to that lol
There are however WOOL dreads, which are way lighter, natural, and actually look more like dreads than the fake hair ones do. These you can make yourself, and I've seen them braided into short hair.

But dread 'falls' are fun. Basically just fake dreads mounted on lace or a tie of some sort which you tie into your own hair while in a ponytail/bun/pigtails/etc.
Some places can get REALLY pricey, but if you scrounge around you can find some decent priced ones.
Plus they're really simple to make yourself too, the materials can just be tricky to get a hold of sometimes though.

You're gonna get crap from people here because they're synthetic - but don't let that turn you off to it. Especially if you wanna try them so you can get a feel for what real dreads may feel like on you. Dreads are about freedom, not fashion - so keep that in mind.

im kinda in agreement with that but not gonna give ya shoit over it..lol
i will telll ya there was 1 girl i knew around town years ago that had some fake dreads attached somehow to her real hair
it looked kinda silly, but kinda dreadish the 1st year (somehow she pulled off a look though that made dreads, at least on her seem slutty...hard to describe why, just a feelin ya got) well hadnt seen her in couple years at least and then ran into her 1 day..still had those fake dreads in, but the real hair had grown quite a bit (and probly cause sher used alotta products never even began to dread)
the result was completely straight hair about 1/.2 way then a very distinct line where the fake ones were attached
i didnt lookj at ther link to see if that was something simular but what id like to suggest is this

    save your money
find a freind with long dreads
in front of a mirror just drape your freinds dreads over your head...and there ya have it..how you'd look with dreads

ofcouyrse your dreads will grow to suite you

ofcourse u can try any of the options slang suggested to see how ppl will reacte to ya with dreads, but keep in mind if you do that theyre reacting to you with synthetic dreads not real dreads, and no matter how well made the difference is odvios enough to alter reactions

    damn thats expensive
500$ just to see what u might look like with em?

get some aloe gell, goop up your hair really good and twist it into dreadlike strands..keep in mind you'll look kinda goopy and all but close enough to give ya an idea..then just rince it out

    there just saved ysa $500
now i'll save ya some more..if u do dread, dont even concider payin a salon, or buying all kinds of useless dread "products"
just keep it clean and let it go..backcomb if u feel u must, but dont do anything else

u cant buy dreads but u can buy a massive headache

Some synths are more permanent than others and I beleive they may be meant to get redone or tooled up after a three months or so.

Regarding trying them out as a precursor to real dreads: I wouldn't bother. You're either ready to make the leap into dreads regardless of thier looks or not.

Regarding them as fashion: Go for it if it's just a playing around with your hair thing or if you're going for a specific look. I rather think the Cybergoth/Steampunk look that uses the synth dreads is pretty sexy and neat. But do shop around.

A full head of synthetic dreads aren't for me (although I'd consider one or two to add a little non-permanent color in the future). I'm not one to judge a person who has them though... they're kinda fun to see since they're so different and usually so colorful. I prefer freaky people - people watch'n over normal-look'n folk any day of the week.

As far as having them be a sort of "tester" head of dreads... My opinion is that the experience and look is SO much different. They don't look like real dreads to me. Even ones made of real hair always kinda have a rag-doll-yarn-hair look to them to me, so I really don't think they'd be the best way to tell whether dreads are something you'd want. Plus, real dreads are so damn frustrating in the beginning... I just don't think synths could prepare you for the reality of having a head full of knots. But again, that's my opinion.

So for fun, why not? (especially if you make them yourself on the cheap). For a way to tell if real dreads are for you, maybe... but probably not.

hey ive jst put my synthdreads in and i love them i made them myself and it onli cost me under 20 quid i decided to get them as i fancied a change and until my hair grows long enough to dread. in my opinon i think either real dreads or synth dreads depends on the person you are.
they also do itch a bit but not that much and it is onli your scalp getting used to them and you do idealy have to take them out after about 3 months or they do dread into your natural hair. i also dont think that they dont do much damage to your natural hair except making it a bit afro after you take them out but your hair will go back to normal after you wash your hair. whether you choose to dread or not either way good luck

If you want to see how you'd look with dreads, I'll photoshop you :p I'm a wizz at photoshop and have given myself (before I got dreads) and my brother dreads xD PM me if you're interested ^^ I'll just need a picture of you, and some dreads you like ^^ preferably in the same sorta angle but if not I'm sure I could sort it out :)

And yea I agree with the others, synths really don't prepare you for the real dread journey :) For fashion I think they are pretty neat. I've just bought some different coloured balls of merino felting wool to make my own felt dreads to spice mine up a bit :)

I'd suggest going onto ebay to this shop: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/itsavintagething/ And look at all the awesome colours!! You can match your hair colour, buy a few balls and make some dreads for a fraction of the pirce to get them done professionally. You could even employ a couple of mates to learn how to attach them (just google it) and they could attach them for you :)
