My grandmother visited last week. I seriously wanted to slash my wrists, but that's for another thread. Anyhow, she talked about the weather constantly. We don't have tv, so she complained about not catching the weather on the news, she called my Gpa daily to get a weather update for back home, she tried to buy me an outdoor thermometer. Almost every freaking convo was about weather. She calls me up to let me know she made it home, and "blah blah blah weather this weather that". Why do people talk about the weather so much?!? It is what it is, people.

That's my sentiments exactly! I told someone at work the other day that I haven't watched any kind of news on TV, besides NFL, for several years. The dude looked shocked and apalled, and asked me, "But where do you get your weather!?" I told him I get my weather outside and he was completely lost.

i do check the weather because i work largely outside and it helps me plan my week. i just see no need to then go and discuss it with people, except when it pertains to work.

but then, i still don't watch it on tv. there's websites for that.

I check it on my phone when i want to drive my jeep with no top or doors. Other than that i could go without. Its not like they are correct anyway, The weather man flips a coin like the rest.

I sometimes find myself bringing up the weather in small talk exchanges with people. Mostly because I have nothing else to say and I feel that I must say SOMETHING. I reckon this probably holds true with others as well. I mean, shit, there is only so much you can say to people you would rather not speak to at all. I think the weather is simply the first thing that pops into people's heads when they have nothing else to say. If I could say nothing to people at all, I would. Most of them, anyway.

I was #2. I wasn't going to till I read the above post.

Why do you feel you must talk to people you don't want to? A simple nod should suffice, I don't see why you have to join the sheeple with the weather talk.

Well...we get tornadoes here...I think that's pretty interesting and it's pretty damn important to know if one's coming or not. It's tornado season, so I do very much like knowing about the weather.

people talk about the weather, in order to avoid beating each other over the head for their religion and politics. this might be less amusing, then everyone against everyone else, but it also means living long enough to be able to figure things out and enjoy making things.

there's nothing wrong with weather watching as a hobby. like all hobbys of course, if you're into it you are, if your not you're not.

i wish my baromiter hadn't broken by transporting it over a mountain, as i rather expected it would, but really had no alternative. the hygrometer and thermometers survived however, and i never have owned an animomiter.

Your grandmother is from Minnesota, right?

If someone is from an area where weather fluctuates and can turn deadly, talking about that weather is just becomes second nature. This goes double if you've lived/worked on a farm.

A lot of older people feel cold when someone younger may not notice the temperature. My mother used to wear a sweater all summer long. The conversation could be related to that.

I walk my dog a few times a day and try to know if it is raining or cold or hot, so that I know how to dress when I go out. Don't most people do that?

    lmfao. wasn't me but,

You should socially fuck with not saying anything at all. Especially If that is how you truly are like. Make people talk to you, or gain your genuine interest.

Better than cowtowing or bending over backwards to be liked or socialize correctly (counter-intuitive & probably doesn't make you look or feel so good).

    that'll be 3 cents.

on a related note, sometimes I'll try 'n tell people "it's nice out.." when it REALLY IS, and I really am a fan of warm sunny weather, but of course those 5 seconds of conversation never really go anywhere.
