I haven't made a hat in quite awhile, but the last one i made (about a month ago) i just pulled the hook out (which left a loop) and cut the yarn, then i took the string that was still attatched to the hat and pulled it through the loop. I haven't worn the hat too much but it's held up so far. I'm really not sure about "proper" methods so I'd suggest googling around or waiting for a more advanced crocheter answer this.

You started at the top and are ending at the opening where your head goes in, right? Because knitters, and even some crocheters, do it the other way and that's different.

Just do what the person above me said, basicly, except make several knots. Do that first loop, pull the yarn through, then go around the post part of a stitch or through the next v, and pull another loop through. Make a few knots so that it doesn't unravel. And when you make a knot, pull the yarn through the loop 3 times.

Are you going to show us a photo?
