So what do you think about the whole situation? Should Blair give a timetable for leaving office? Should he set an exact date? Should Brown be crowned his successor, or would someone else be better in charge?

    Arrrrrgh ackkkk mehhhhh!

I dunno, personally I wouldn't trust any of the politicians about to run the country, but somebody's got to do it.

Come on the Libs or the Greens for the next election!

I quite like the way he totally shot himself in the foot by announcing that he would step down way ahead of time... everyone will have been asking "are you going yet? are you going yet?" for about two years! What a numpty.

The most unpopular and unsuccessful war in recent history will be his lasting legacy; all the desperate distraction techniques he's been employing really can't get over that. He should've resigned three years ago. Whenever he goes it will be in shame:)

Brown is Scottish, but I can't see how he's a socialist. He's a chief architect of the New Labour project, set spending at the same rate as the Tories in the first term, supported the war, supported id cards and although he may be slightly to the left of Blair, I don't think anyone should have any illusions as to how big that gap is.

John McDonnel for leader! Now he's a real socialist....

yeah, he's a million miles away from the "old" labour socialists ... true.... but compared to the tories ......

I pity whoever gets the job, they got a lotta cleaning up to do....

The sad thing is, most of the Labour front bench were red blooded commies in their youth - some were even in the Communist Party. It's a shame only some MPs have managed to keep their ideals and take them into old age and government. Blair though, he was never a socialist. In fact, he was probably the best weapon the Tories never had - he took the Labour party and remoulded it in their image even before he was PM....

When Benn was in the cabinet he was relatively right wing alas - I suppose that's what government can do to you. His best moments have been as back-bencher shooting down the leadership in debate....

Analysts seem to be saying that there will be very little change under Brown, and that that's what most party activists want. It seems more people are unhappy with Blair himself than his policies. It just goes to show how the media, which New Labour has courted more than any other party in British history, has helped to reshape politics and the public sphere around cults of personality, instead of serious debate around serious policies. It's a damn shame....

Never really been able to distinguish between New Labour and the Tories, and Blair has always reminded me far too much of Thatcher. Glad he's going, but I'm none too keen on Gordon Brown either...now John McDonnell...well you might have something there Peace-Phoenix!

The only one that could change the Labour Party is John Mcdonnel. The LP needs to be reclaimed by the working class via the unions.
