so i have about 25 tattoos. the first 20 or so i got i didnt have any opiates in my system and the pain from getting the tattoos was not that bad, but when i got the other 5 i was on opiates and the pain felt 10 times worse and almost unbearable. the guy doing the tat said it was from eating pills it enhanced the pain i thought it would be the opposite effect and help with it. has anyone else ever heard of this or experienced it? just curious as too why it would make it more painful and just a random thought i once got a tat rolling and it was great has anyone ever got one while rolling? i didnt feel a bit of pain it actually felt pretty good
Since opiates reduce the perception of pain, I have no idea why getting a tattoo would hurt worse. But pain can be subjective, and different for different people. What I mean is that the anticipation "oh shit, this is going to hurt" of pain can make the actual pain seem worse. It's also suspected that long term use of opiates can make a person more sensitive to pain. This is called opiod-induced hyperalgesia, but that doesn't sound like what happened in your case.
i was wonderind the same thing i was on herion when i had my neck tat done n i could barly take it, my forearm hurt like hell that day too. but some others didnt bother me as much sober....weird
Good to read this now,if(when) I get any more work done I'll have to try not to take any pills before I go in,cause I would have definately thought that it would hurt less too.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that opiates are not anesthetics so they will not take away the immediate pain sensation. Why the pain would feel worse, I have no idea. I do remember reading something about opiate users having a lower tolerance for pain though.
imma try not to take any next time i go but will see how that works out. i felt bad for the guy doing my tat i had to have him stop like 4 times i never felt that much pain from one. imma see if i can find something on google on this or if someone actually is certain what causes this can let me know. i wanna get my sleeve finished and im dreading the next session coming up might have to get a few rolls to get through it
I think so. I remember someone explained to me scientifically why not to get tattoos on opiates... I was nodding hard though so I dont remember what he said.
Yeah, that's true. They aren't anesthetics. Opiates tend to reduce the perception of pain. The pain signals are being sent, but you don't notice it as much, and anesthetics, such as lidocaine eliminate the pain altogether. So in a situation like this alcohol would probably work better than an opiate.
Or hard core tattoo enthusiast. Only guy I've ever known that was truely covered in tags was a waiter who just loved tats. No jail time or heroin for him. Just sayin. I don't have a tat on me.
