I tried searching the forum and couldn't find anything else about this. I guess I need to vent about this.

I work in a university and I keep hear more and more people putting something down by saying "that's so gay." I have been gay for a number of years and find this little nugget of homophobia much more ugly than the others I've heard.

I've called these fools on this and the response is almost always something along the lines of "but that's just the way I talk" or "everybody says that." I think what bothers me the most is that this it's so casual and so thoughtless.

The same people would probably never say such things about women or racial minorities or other such groups. Somehow it's acceptable to be stupid and casually vicious about gay people. I get even angrier when I realize that other gay people might be hearing such venom and not saying anything or even acting as if this is no big deal and the idiots don't learn how offensive and ugly they're being.

Anyone who uses that really does need a good slap in the face. In fact I did slap my friend who said "that was so gay" (it was a "pimp slap", but a gentle one), but when he asked why I didn't answer.

I tend to avoid commenting on people saying that, just because...no good reason, I just don't want to be a pain in the ass.

I usually do give them a look though...

People who use words like "faggot" and "gay" as deragotory terms are usually not worth your time anyways. I heard someone say today "You studied didn't you you faggot?" to someone else (not me though im openly gay at school) and i just wanted to say this "faggot is going to get a good GPA, this faggot is going to college, this faggot is going to make more money than you because you are a douchebag"

I would've done.[IMG] Its better to get a good job and retire with a load of money than work in McDonalds the rest of your life. Also i believe that those people who use "Faggot" and "Gay" in a derogatory way need to wise up a bit. if thats the best insult that they could think of then im surprised that they even know what it really means

For a while I didn't call people on it. But I've started to recently. But I actually haven't been hearing it as much recently, which is definitely a good thing.

well, ppl don't rly think about the actual meaning of sth being gay, it's like motor function - difficult to get rid of. ppl also say like :"he's such a retard". i mean, that's not an offense, that's just an expression every1 uses.
if i heared some1 sayin that sth ir gay, i'd probly smile or even wouldn't have any reaction at all.

I find the term retard much more offensive than the word gay being used as an insult, but thats just me

I say "that's gay" every once in a while. It has absolutely nothing to do with Homosexuality though.

I am a firm advocate of the phrase, "Dude, that's fucking gay." And I actually date guys.

The phrase has nothing to do with homosexuality, bias, or anything... It's a figure of speech I use to describe something or a situation that's stupid, annoying, or lacking motivation. I use it with my straight friends and I use it with my gay friends.

To those of you that use the phrase that aren't GBL etc.... go right ahead... I absolve you. Most people I know don't really give a good god damn. Life's to fucking short to make bones about something that small and meaningless.

I don't absolve you. And if you're GLBT and you still use that evil expression, I double don't absolve you because you're responsible for holding the rest of us back and I hope something unspeakably and unbearably unpleasant happens to you and keeps happening to you for a very, very long time.

Ok lets be careful this discusssion doesn't get personnal, and into name calling territory, once a thread is posted on here, people are free to agree and disagree as is ther rights.
once people are called for not agreeing thats flamming

Sage, you need to relax a bit. How is the use of a word "holding back" the GLBT community?

I think the words "holding back" are a little bit strong, but one might see that because people are using the words as insults, it brings a bit of a bad reputation to those who are GLBT

I guess I see the point, but it's a very silly thing to get upset over. The term "gay" itself isn't derogatory. Also, it's being used as a completely separate adjective in this case.

the thing is, I find 'retard' offensive because its always been an insult to people with learning difficulties, however 'gay' hasn't always been a term to descibe homosxuals, so I think useing the term is a bit thoughtless, but not as highly abusive as other terms.

    Your so gay.

JK, but you just have to accept it. I always say 'thats so gay" or 'you fagget'. Its just how i talk, and i dont mean towards gay. If you dont like it, ignore it. For fucks sake suck it up.
