Who does everybody think are the top ten best guitarists ever? My list is incomplete, I need some suggerstions, so far it is: 1. Hendrix (obviousely) 2. Eric Clapton 3. Jimmy Page 4. David Gilmour So, any suggestions?
Uli Jon Roth, Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani by the way...check out Rolling Stone's list of best guitarists for a real laugh http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/5937559?rnd=1119400211883&has-player=true&version=6.0.12.1040 the list is pretty absurd and unorganized as a whole, but the worst thing is that it seems more based on how well known the guitarist is than their actual skill level, eg. johnny ramone and kurt cobain, whereas guitarists such as Yngwie were left out for some strange reason (even though he has sold many millions of records) the top positions are filled with mainly average guitarists
Yingyang Malmsteen - all he does is play really really fast. It's like a dentist's drill after about, oh, forty five seconds. Whereas the fantastic solo in "money" by Pink Floyd still gives me chills Hendrix, naturally, for his contributions... Oh, and that woman who tried to play rhythm and lead at the same time and invented bluegrass guitar. That shows creativity, innovation and technique, as well as being something that's been copied since.
Garcia has and always will be my favorite. Even the likes of people such as Clapton said he was the best to ever pick up the instrument.
1. Jimi Hendrix 2. John McLaughlin 3. Wes Montgomery 4. Stevie Ray Vaughan 5. Carlos Santana 6. Django Reinhart 7. Frank Zappa 8. Duane Allman 9. Eric Clapton 10. Trey Anastasio (please don't give me shit for that) there's my list, if you asked me yesterday it prolly would've been different, and if you asked me tomorrow it would be different. but for today, that's it.
RE: apparently you dont appreciate his music in the same way that I do That's not music. It's someone's science project and "longer than yours" rolled into one. "Wow man, he plays fifty million notes a second!"
1.jimi hendrix 2.jimmy page. 3.clapton 4.keith richards 5.eddie van halen 6.santana 7.david gilmour 8.angus young 9.joe perry 10.tommi iommi

I could go on for a few days.
I don't mind the fast playing... could use a little soul instead of hiding behind distortion, but Yngwie gets the job done, that's his opinion, and as long as people like him, there isn't a whole lot you can say because I know he's good. Though, I feel that Eric Johnson trumps him in that style of playing. Frank Zappa could do some soulful shit while maintaining speed as well, as does Derek Trucks. I caught EJ and Derek Trucks on their tour. They were simply amazing, though I heard that Eric and Derek had many a disagreement about tape trading and recording... Eric got pissed off because people had mic booms.
its hard to compare the skill level of two players like that, but judging from the footage Ive seen Yngwie still holds the crown. as far as the actual music goes, I feel that Yngwie is also alot more innovative, and has obviously had a much larger impact on rock music (somewhat due to circumstancial reasons, perhaps... although Eric Johnson is still yet to pioneer in a new sub-genre of music) I also find it odd how you mention Steve Vai in your list over Yngwie, Satriani or even Eric Johnson. maybe you forgot to mention those names, but otherwise it seems strange that you (someone who doesnt seem to be a huge fan of that kind of music) would prefer the extremely quirky style of Steve Vai over the others
Yeah, they're both good in their own styles, I believe. Yngwie definately had a bigger impact. Eric had a hard time getting to where he's at today, dealing with labels. Yngwie got the signature strat first, so that could say something too.
Well, it usually comes down to Jimi and Jimmy for the best guitarists title (and popularity as well). I'd have to say I like Jimmy's playing better, but Hendrix seemed to get started earlier, so you have to factor that in... http://www.livecollection.net/mp3/jimmy_solo.mp3 http://www.livecollection.net/mp3/jimi_solo.mp3
being the second person to ever get a signature strat (after Eric Clapton) says something as well judging by popularity, it probably comes down to those two. but I think that Jimi Hendrix is definitly the most innovative guitarist of all time, and thats what matters most. whats amazing is that this is more or less undisputed, as Im sure that most people who know anything about guitar would agree on how influential Jimi really was
Jimi Hendrix Keith Richards George Harrison Brian May Eric Clapton and one czech guitarist.. still alive.. from band called Pražský výbìr - Michal Pavlíèek - my czech guitar god.
