Anyone have any viable ideas of what could or should be done to achieve a peacefull, equitable world for all inhabitants?
If everybody stopped being greedy then we could achieve something peaceful. If there was no want for things we don't need, if all the countries came together and decided to share the worlds resources equally, no better or worse countries, no need to fight with eachother over money or land or resources. Eliminate the ultimate evil - money, just learn to share, its childs stuff really. The governments in power are very selfish 'we need this and that, they aren't willing to give it to us so we will think of any old excuse and go and invade their country and take what we want, so we are the best'... Barriers between us, such as seperate countries and class, create tension, they create unnessicary hatred and its a cause for things like war. Sharing and caring, just because someone lives in another country doesn't mean they deserve to be treated differently. Forgive the wrong that others deal to you, don't carry hate or grudges, let go, free yourself, that's hard but doable, I've done it, I forgave the man who took my virginity unconsensually and I no longer carry that hate, or fear. And to realise that our fellow creatures on earth are life, not just meat, not just 'lesser' than humans, they are beautiful creatures just trying to live their lives too. It's very do able, but it would need to include every single person on the planet to want it and live by it, otherwise it wouldn't work.
Gun Control. I'm a firm believer in it. Hypothetically I would love to see all weapons rounded up and disposed of, melted down. We could turn them into wheel chairs and prostetics for veterans! Hopefully, this would end all violence, but I'm sure we would just pick up sticks and start fighting!
The questions are so numerous, the problems seem so insurmountable,it's hard to know where to start. The best we can do is start a dialogue...(With whom...I wonder?) I've spent the best part of my life trying to ponder the question you have asked scratcho and I still just can't get my head around it...And I admit I'm not the brightest spark...I think what we need is a synthesis of knowledge disciplines and a willingness to approach these problems with universal best interests at heart...Unfortunately the five or or so per cent who control the power on Earth seem quite happy to let things remain as they are...And even to see the riches of this planet to fall farther into their hands...But we the people should never give up...The super rich and powerful couldn't survive without us...We still need to try and retain a powerful voice and create spaces for dissent and open channels of communication for disseminating new models for living and exchange of the means of subsistence.I consider myself to be lucky to have a roof over my head and have enough food to live on with a little bit of cash left over for entertainment.By many people's standards in the first World capitalist system I am poor...But I consider myself to be rich...Because I have access to knowledge and do not crave that which I do not want...Let's start a dialogue here...Sorry this is so rambling and ill-informed but I've had a few drinks!
This is a very difficult question. It's like minded people like us that try to push for peace and equality. The problem come with resistance from those who enjoy hurting others! There are plenty of "easier said than done"s that would work to fix this nation/world. It takes everyone being on bored. But since that's not going to happen, the best thing we can do is control ourselves and hope our personal lives flow smoother than the world as a whole!
Evolution will occur with a peaceful world. Once people realise and are aware that they are not a singular being, then mankinds potential for evolution will shine through. I believe it will happen as a whole spieces, rather than everybody seperately, so we all need to be on the same level, which we would be, hopefully, in the type of world I breifly described in my first post.
Part of the problem is that people cannot visualize change....They think that if there is a change to the economic system and means of production the whole sky will fall on our heads...People think that a truly socialist mode of society and distribution of wealth would be at war with our apparent need for competition and self interest...That it would require too much "top down" organization and lead to less personal freedom. What people don't see,or what the "powers that be" don't want us to see,is how much time, energy and waste of resources it takes to keep the present system going and how "We Are Still Not Free" within this! It is self evident that there are enough resources on the planet to provide EVERYONE with food, shelter and adequate healthcare...AND IT WOULDN'T TAKE TO MUCH ORGANIZATION TO DISTRIBUTE THIS...It makes me so angry!!!...A penny for you thoughts PEOPLE!
Well dixy pixie, that last bits true, each individual needs to work on themselves, needs to want change for themselves, forcing it would go against the ideal. If each person opened their mind and heart to the rest of the world, forgave their suffering, and realises that everyone else is suffering alongside them, we could have progress. I'm odd, I easily become seperate from the human race, most days I don't feel human and I look at the people around me and I see everyone fighting the same battle, suffering, but without actually realising that the person sitting next to them is exactly the same!!
I agree with MamaPeace that the desire for change is something that each individual has to realize for themselves...You cannot shovel ideology down people's throats - they will throw up.We as humanity need to forgive humanity,as we stand, for once and for all,for whatever we have done to each other over the thousands of years of religious intolerance, political differences and circumstantial facticities. It's time to grow up not blow up.
i think 6 billion connected people is ungovernable.. there's nowhere else to expand, but our numbers are exploding. it's like a school bus.. the driver starts the trip in the morning on an empty bus. It's peaceful, quiet, no conflict or debate, just the roar of the engine. Then he picks up the first kid, who sits in an empty seat and may say a few words to the driver, but nothing silly, as they sit there and stare out the window. then the driver picks up the second kid, and then a couple more, and a couple more. eventually the bus is full. These kids all have various demeanors, some try to get the last ten minutes of sleep before school on the bus ride, others are throwing wads of paper back and forth, others are laughing, gossiping, shoving each other. It's very chaotic and all the while the driver is still trying do drive the bus, he is also having to try to keep a closer eye on the students, and that is hard since the attention has to be divided among so many more students. then eventually they get to school, and the driver opens the door and all the kids get off the bus.. It's peaceful again... that's just like society. our school bus (the earth) is full
Plenty of room on earth right now. It just takes co-operation of all people, willingness to give and not expect to receive.
Who controlled who on the journey though? Was it the driver, who may have had the control of the vehicle, or was it the pupils who ultimately had the control over whether he had that job or not, because without them then he wouldn't be driving that bus..
I disagree with that. Humans have been artificially inflating the carrying capacity of earth for a long time now, most recently using fossil fuels. Of course, we may come up with new ways to keep the bubble going a little longer, but inevitably it has to stop. The question is, will it be the planet that stops us, through feedback mechanisms (which would be painful for humanity) or can we get it together to start consuming less, producing less and perhaps most importantly, breeding less? We seem to have evolved the ability for amazing intelligence, toolmaking etc, but we never lost the innate animal instincts of consuming and breeding as much as possible. When coupled together they've led to this exponential growth in population, massive pollution of oceans and rivers, climate change, mass extinctions and all the rest of it! So, the only way I see the planet becoming governable as a whole (which was the original question, after all) is some sort of evolutionary step forward, whereby we develop far more planetary awareness, become more ''in tune'' with nature and realise that everything on this planet is inter-dependant. I dont think it would take much, just that small shift in conciousness and a lot of things would change. Thats my perspective on it, at least Peace.
Some great answers. The events of the last day show perhaps some of the difficulty in realizing a long term livable habitat for the ever growing population. Thank you all for your responses. Some may not think so, but we are ALL in this together. I did not ask this question so that I could blab my opinion. I've done that often enough. Please continue.
It would take a shift in consciousness. I believe this is already happening. Everywhere I look I see people growing their own food. Creating compost, cutting down on waste and consumption, keeping the economy local, biking and walking. It just needs to happen on a large scale and it needs to be funded. Funding is right now going into a violent, war loving, unsustainable society. It seems to me that the poor and middle class are more willing to do their part than ever before, but it takes the wealthy, the ones who can put money into science and technology for a more sustainable life, that will really push us forward. This is the paradox, because the wealthy aren't always the biggest risk takers, once they've earned their wealth. They would rather continue investing in outdated dinosaur industries.
anarcho-syndicalism Any system where the decisions that affect the little people come from up above, will never work.
