is a book that i just finished. i know most high schools in america assign this book, and it's considered to be one of the greatest novels ever, but I really can't tell why. I didn't think it was THAT good is what i'm saying. every other sentense is "that god damned <insert word here>" or "I really am." I dunno what to think of it yet. what do you guys think? I was expecting to read get a masterpiece when i started, and now I feel kind of disappointed. so yea, do you guys think it was overrated, or does it deserve its title as one of the best books evah?
Yeah, I read it for school this year too and was pretty disappointed. I was expecting it to be a lot better.
i found tht most of the guys in my class didnt like it and most girls did. but many of the girls that didnt like it were stoners(idk if it has anything to do with it), but one stoner chick loved it. i have a lot of stoners in that class, 7 out of like 16, 17. alot, most of all my classes
exactly. the whole book was basically him talking about how much his life sucks and how depressed he is. nowadays he'd be an emo kid.
I haven't read it since freshmen year in high school, not too memorable. Probably should re-read it though
We never had to read that in high school, but I'm sure it sucks, because all high school novels you have to read suck.. except To Kill a Mockingbird. That's one of my favorite books. I had to read it when I was in 9th grade, and loved it ever since.
Just curious, what books do you guys like? The Catcher in the Rye is one of those rare books which is heralded as a classic of American literature that at the same time appeals to nearly to its young audience because of it's controversial material and its spot-on portrayal of teenage angst as most first-time readers are in middle school or early high school.
I really liked the Awakening. Crime and Punishment was pretty good. Waiting for Godot. To Kill a Mockingbird has already been said. Shakespeare is way overdone, as are guilt trips over slavery and the holocaust. Beowulf was interesting, mainly because of its origins. Catcher in the Rye is better than the Great Gatsby though, that has to be the worst "classic" I've ever been forced to read.
Great great book. I guess I can understand why someone wouldn't like it, but to say it's a bad book or poorly written is pretty ignorant.
I read catcher in the rye a couple years back and quite enjoyed it. Im also reading to kill a mockingbird at the moment and i really like it.
what about mycelium in the rye... thats always good too. because within weeks the fruiting bodies will be popping up.
