    Here is my dilemma...

My parents went to SC and brought back a tshirt for my son. It has the rebel flag on it. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to upset my mom....BUT...

I didn't let him wear it to school today. I personally find it a bit offensive, and I am afraid he would get in trouble for wearing it.

    What are your opinions?

 I'm gonna keep my southern mouth shut. ;)

Was it a Dixie shirt? Those things are all over the place down here.

    Offensive.

A nice gesture... maybe tell him to keep it as a souvenir but not to wear...

They aren't allowed at any of the schools I went to.... they were allowed when I was in school though but only the redneck, racist idiots wore them and often had the flags hanging off their pick up trucks. yeeehaw. Haha. Yeah but not allowed now.

Whether it's fair or not, that flag represents racism for some people. I think you made the right choice, Mitten.

I'm sure it's a different story than what I stated in the south.

My mom was just buying a souvenir, she wasn't "trying to get him to wear" anything. She probably has no idea. We are Canadian.

Anyway, TreeHugger, open your southern mouth. :D

    I agree...

You could always sew the Canada flag over it...

i don't see anything terribly offensive about it, but i still doubt it would have been allowed in school, so i also wouldn't have let him wear it there

good point but Old Glory represent racism alot more since slave ships flew that flag a whole lot more often...

Fuck flags peroid they dont do shit but cause controversy and they should all be burned.

Noboby even recognizes my flag outside its Upsidedown and has been that way for five now going on six fucking years.. wonder why?

I know it is offensive to some people....but really it's a flag. That would be like saying my pawpaw was offended by the $20 bill. Pfft to him it was just money with a dickwad's face on it. Kinda like the penny.....haha

I don't promote the confederate flag.....but there was more than just one. People only pay attention to the one though. I don't wear dixie shirts, but I'm not going to bitch if someone I know does. In fact I have a good friend that has more than one.......the best part? She's black...and has a soft spot for rednecks.

See, the difference between Georgia and PA is that in PA that would NEVER happen (a black person wearing that shirt)... I have a feeling the intention is different when someone above the mason-dixon line wears that flag...

No, I wouldn't let them wear it. I have never been fond of the rebel flag, but I dont I personally don't see it as inherently supporting racism more then I would see a Japanese wearing a Japanese flag shirt as an endorsement of bombing pearl harbor.

However it does carry that context, so it should be treated very carefully, and your son is too young to have perspective on that issue.

Not letting him wear it is quite sensible considering the reactions he could get from some 'sensitive' people out there.

    well,
my dad is from the south and i was born in the south...i used to be a huge fan of the dukes of hazzard and i always wanted to paint one of my cars orange like the general lee...having said that...i think the southern flag is a symbol of a way of life that old southern curmudgeons wont let go of...it'll die out in four, perhaps five generations...its a fucking 150 year old fad...
