I just finished reading this book, and to those who have read it, i was just wondering if you had any thoughts you would like to discuss about it.
Yes ummmm do you think Jonas died at the end or did he find some-thing/place?I think he found a normal place where people did not go to sameness
It all depends on your view of life, each view is totally different. Actually, the author of The Giver (escaped my mind right now) wrote a sequel to it, but then decided it would be better just to keep the one.
I think Jonas found a town like the ones we know of in reality but then there's a part of me that thinks he died. Is the sequal sold in stores?
I can't remember the author's name. Anyway, it was told that she never wanted to write a sequal to the story because it wouldn't have the effect on people that she wanted, or some such. This book has always puzzled my mind since I read it about three or four years ago. I should read it again someday.
good book. its been awhile since ive read it, but i think that jonas died. i pictured him and the kid he was with freezing to death. and i read gathering blue (by the same author) and the ending really pissed me off, i dont know why anyone would do somthing like that.
damn,I haven't read that book since 6th grade. I had forgotten all about it before I saw this thread.
I've read The Giver about 4 times since I was first introduced to it in 8th grade. It just amazes me (science fiction books in general) how well written and detailed it was. Lowis Lowry is one of my favorite authors, along with Ray Bradbury, because of the ideas and concepts that she uses. To answer the question posed before me, I think Jonas and little Gabriel do find that special place where sameness is non-existant.
Oh, fuck that book. Even though it's insanely good, I got so fucking tired of it. Due to poor planning, I was assigned it to read it every year from fourth to ninth grade, and I had read it three times previously before fourth grade. I think he did die. Sometimes, life just bites you in the ass like that. You try to escape something but it's too far-reaching... a bit like the American government will be in people's lives before too long. On the other hand, I hope in my heart of hearts that he didn't die.
Yeah, Lois Lowry is a great author....I'm honestly not sure how I think it ends....it's something to ponder
ive always thought, since 8th grade, that Jonas was left alone with Gabriel, they never found anymore life, but were content on being by themselves, in their own life.
I studied The Giver in my Children's literature class this term. I thought it was a great book - it reminded me of 1984 for kids - When I first read it, it didn't even occur to me that Jonas and Gabriel died. But when we discussed it in class, the prof and the majority of students seemed to think that they died at the end. There is the existance of the second book which is a continuation of The Giver, so obviously Jonas survives. However, that last line about the echo can make you really think twice about it if you didn't know about Gathering Blue.
