ok, so last night my friend spent 6 hours backcombing my hair (my head still hurts) and well, i look like a poof ball, i mean there are loose hairs EVERYWHERE and im worried they might not be tight enough even though she said its not possiable to comb them anymore, although she keeps putting rubberbands in them to hold up the ends?
basically im worried we did it wrong and they wont lock up? is this normal? its really really frizzy and im like O.O
i'm not using wax, is there anything i can do to maybe tame some of it? I look like im attempting an afro lol

    Welcome to the forum.

Yes, everything that is happening is normal. They will not look like dreadlocks for a long time... well, proper dreadlocks. Everyone that backcombs goes through the "sideshow bob" phase. I posted the exact same thing when I first had mine done. =)

I would recommend taking the rubber bands out. If you search the forum for a bit, you will see that hair often eats the rubber bands (and most people do not feel that they are necessary).

If you want to tame some of the frizzies, you can use aloe vera to act as a bit of a gel. But I would suggest you embrace the frizzies cuz if you don't make peace with them, you won't enjoy dreadlocks.

I suggest palm rolling the poofs to tighten them.

this made me laugh FAR too much

loose hairs happen, youll have them for AGES.. i mean years
you dont have dreads, you have backcombed sections of hair.. you wont have 'dreads' for ages either
rubber bands.... pointless. take them out

    chill

pics or it never happened :)

We all posted this exact same topic at one point or another, you dont need the bands, so you can take em out, after that just leave them be, your hair wants to dread, hair knots, all your doing is trying to encourage it in a certain way

    cool user name

also, dreads come with time. no amount of fucking around with them will make them lock faster. will probably make them lock slower actually. your best bet is to leave em alone and let them sort themselves out.

theyll look better by august.. more 'together' as opposed to fluffy frizzness.

rubberbands help as for the roots locking more tight. they arent totally useless. however, they look goofy and you need to replace them every 4-5 days so your hair doesnt decide to eat them.

With back-combed dreads they look like frizzy lumps for like a week, and then turn into sorta loose dreadlock shaped longer lumps, but unevenly proportioned and you'll stay like that for a long while maybe 3-6 months+ and after washing you'll get a lot of loose hairs, they only start on their way to looking like maturer dreadlocks after back-combing maybe 9-12 months later.

So your going to have to learn to live with them looking a little comical for quite a while =p
