I'm sure we've all heard this one before: "Well, plants are alive, too. So isn't this the same thing?" That is such bullshit. By that same logic, cannabalism should be legalized because people are animals, and since people are animals, eating soylent green it's the same thing as eating spinach. Meat eaters say that when they feel threatoned. It's so pathetic. They are entitled to their opinion on whether or not to eat meat. That is a very personal decision one must make for theirselves. However, they need to stop making lameass remarks like that.
I've gotten that comment as well. I was talking to my mother about veganism a few days ago and not only did she try and tell me fish is vegan she also had the nerve to ask me where you draw then line between plant and animal (didn't we learn that in preschool?) I hate when people try and argue about things when they haven't done any reasearch.
ALSO... I got this comment in my livejournal a few days ago. SOME PEOPLE SUCK! http://www.livejournal.com/users/fireprincess6/122478.html?thread=53870#t53870 My favorite line is that veganism is a fad... *edit-posted wrong url*
If vegetarianism\veganism is a "fad", how come I don't know anyone else who is one? Ugh. People can be stupid sometimes.
im a meat eater and annoying at the same time heh heh anyhoo...u guys ever herd of a Zimbat?...i sure havnt
Agreed feministhippy if it were a fad I'd be ale to go out to eat with my friends and order more the gardenburgers and side salads
"but it's already dead, so you might as well eat it" that line always brings out my alter ego, captain crankypants. I know what mean with the 'plants r alive too thing'. My favorite reply to that is "I see. So if you had a roast baby on one plate, and a salad on the other, which would you eat?" Luckily my family has mainly been supportive. It's only friends who i have to deal with, and it's fairly easy to change the subject.
I get those too, annoys me no end. The only veggies around here are me and the rabbit. When my mother says I'm a vegetarian people often ask her 'and does she eat fish?' I'll give you three guesses From my mother (in the first month): We get free range meat, so the animals are happy. What's wrong with that. A) Free range is a marketing scam, there is virtually no diffrence in the animal's lives. B) They still die C) Do you honestly think those (Tesco own cheap chicken pieces) are free range (they aren't, quite the opposite unfortunatly) My family go to great lengths pondering aloud how they can't live without steak/bacon/whatever. Yes I know that, you heartless weaklings. I live with you! From my Grandmother: You don't know what you're missing? No I do Gran, that's why I don't eat it. From my brother: Oi veggie, do you want some (waves meat product at me). No thank you *plots to feed him tofu as revenge* (for the record I like tofu, but it freaks my omni family out no end) Also from mother dearest (about those stupid silver balls used for cake decorating): She doesn't eat those, apparently they have gelatine in and are made from cows. (said in oh so patronising voice) What about Eskimos, they need to eat meat. I think you'll find my lifestyle has nothing in common with an Eskimo's. Therefore the comparison is stupid. Stuff about lions, circle of life, blah blah blah Do I look like a bloody lion Just general stupid crap that is the result of guilt/stupidity and 0.3 seconds thought. TTFN Sage
Hmmm... I'm a vegetarian who happens to believe that plants have a spirit, a conciousness of sorts. I've lived and worked around plants my whole life and that is just my conclusion based upon observation. I also happen to think that human beings have something special besides just opposable thumbs and a fancy brain that makes them special and different from other creatures, and that to kill a human is a greater crime than to kill an animal or a plant. What does that make me? So I guess my point is that it is silly to judge someone on their beliefs. If you went around judging everyone with a belief you didn't understand as stupid, you would soon think yourself to be the smartest person on earth and just about everyone else will think you are one of the dumbest.
Well, do you believe that there is no difference between plants and animals? Because if you think human's are grander than the rest of the animal kingdom, you should be able to except the fact that animals are compared to the plant kingdom, as well. I wasn't saying that there was perfect equality between people and the rest of the animal kingdom, because while I do believe animals have souls and thus are no lower than we are, I'm not in the mood to get into that debate. I was saying that by their logic, killing a human for food is no different than killing a coliflower.
very well said indeed No offense, but why do you think someone would make a statement out of guilt? I cant see an omni going "oh god, i feel so bad about eating bambi...YOU SUCK VEGGIE BASTARD!" I think most disputes and snide remarks between veggies and omnis occur because each thinks their own way to be best or because its not mainstream that its somehow not right or wrong... *shrugs*
No, people just say that to be rude sometimes. I've never insulted a meat eater for their beliefs: that is a personal decision one makes for theirself. There is no real excuse you can make for people who say that: They're just being rude.
Yeah that plants have feelings thing is such a cop out. One time i had people use this on me, and i replied how being vegan saves plants... once i proved this, they suddenly started giving me shit for 'caring about a blade of grass'. so much for caring about plants eh... yeah just feel that genuine caring for other life forms. they didnt care, they just it used it as excuse to kill and hurt animals. i read many meat eaters avoid acknowledging the truth and use these dumb excuses because admitting to self the truth would mean either changing their image of themselves (yes i support cruelty to animals), or changing their behaviour (stop supporting cruelty to animals). and they don’t want to do either so they make up load of Bs excuses to avoid it completely.
"Uhh, dad? I've decided I'm a vegetarian." "No you're not." "Yes I am." "You'll eat what you're given" "I can make my own food." "Dinner's in half an hour. we're having a roast." Over the next month... "you can eat this bacon, it came from the bacon tree... do you know how many lentils died for that soup... i can't wait till you grow out of this veggie thing, i found a great chicken recipe." He got over it after that. It might have had something to do with sit down night after night watching me eat roast capsicum/eggplant lasagna, olive and ricotta pasta, mushroom burgers... now when we're out he'll often order the vegetarian meal just because he prefers the taste. i don't think it has to do with guilt, it's just breaking out of a certain mindset. he was used to meat and potatoes, he worked out there were advantages to a different style
because that would require killing human beings and thats illegal and despite what some veggies here say, killing other animals isnt canabilism...some people just forgot to look at the dictionary.
there was a guy in germany who advertised on the net, looking for a human who wanted to be eaten. he found one. after he ate the guy, he was convicted for manslaughter, despite the fact he had not done anything against the other persons will. it isn't the dictionary definition of cannabilism, it's the taboos assosiated with it. We are disgusted (generalisation) by the idea of one human eating another thinking, feeling person with a family and a life of their own, and yet despite the fact that animals can feel pain and form attatchments, we-- as a society-- condone eating them. in describing this hypocrisy, that's where many vegetarians blur the lines between cannabilism and simple omnivorism.
A mammalian species eating it's own, causes forms of spongiform encephalopathy, AKA mad cow disease, scrapie, Kuru, Creutzfield-Jacob disease. In humans Creutzfield-Jacob disease leads to dementia and death, no cures available.
Keep on Keepin on... My daughter (15) is a vegetarian, and although I'm not I support her and am learning to enjoy the meals I've learned to prepare. I don't share her moral convictions, but applaud her willingness to walk her talk in many areas of her life regardless of what others say. My daughter was a serious carnivore and then one day about 2 years ago at a Thanksgiving dinner she picked up the neckbone of the Turkey and asked me "What's this?", I said "It's the neck"..she said "The neck, like the actual neck" (picture her holding this piece of meat between two fingers far from her body with one hand and the other holding on to her neck looking almost green) She looked at me and said "That's it, never ever again"...She had tried it before but the pepperoni lured her back into the carnivorous fold, I don't think anyone or anything could lure her now. I am not there yet, but it's getting closer and closer...each day a little more of her rubs off on me. Keep your heads high, walk your talk and others will see a light in you and want to follow in your foot steps. Also..for those of you wanting to go somewhere for GREAT vegetarian food, go for Indian or Thai...(awesome tofu in Thai food). peace & light Sheila
