God knows I also hate limited-liability security and equity selling groups of strangers... The corporation did it.
I realize that haggling is common in places like that. All I was saying originally is that if he hadn't haggled over something so trivial as $5, then he would have the complete jacket and would not have to bitch about being cold. If anything, he would have the complete jacket because the guy wouldn't have had time to pull out the liner as he was walking away, then call him back over. Not to mention, exchange rates work out in his favor in those situations. So why not just fucking give the guy he was asking for?
Thanks for the lesson, you know, that might be the first time I've heard of this kind of concept. So enlightening! Thank you!!
deviate Perhaps the trader would have taken the liner out anyway. You're right, if BM had just said: 'Here you go, here is a slightly inflated amount for a ripped-off jacket. Have a nice day' - perhaps he would have gone back to the hostel with a complete Jacket. I think the part that did him no favours was: I was haggling with him for 15 minutes. (remember this was a decade ago: about $5 might have been more and been worth more. About 15 minutes could have actually been 5 minutes) But as he said: 'It was just a friendly haggle in a culture where haggling is common practice and expected. If he didn't want $5 for the jacket he would not have sold it to me, it's as simple as that. Plus I know I still paid 'tourist tax'. ' It feels like you and others have pitted Poor East against Rich West here. It might be just the way he told the story, and peoples perceptions of BM (which seem to be absolutely appalling ) ...but to me it really didn't sound that terrible. Read over some of the comments you and others have made about what you think happened (and some of the things you seem to think KNOW happened). It's slightly ridiculous. It stretches even to your last post: '...would not have to bitch about being cold.' Where does he bitch about being cold? Look at the picture I posted. Imagine if BM was dealing with a trader like that - would you still feel really bad for this unknown trader? I appreciate if this unknown trader was on the side of the road in rags, and BM was haggling with him - my sympathies would be with the trader. But I am going on what has been said - not inventing a scenario I have no idea actually occurred. So BM was a little stingy PERHAPS - he got his comeuppance PERHAPS. Isn't that called karma?
Hearing something and learning something are separate of course. But crocodile outrage at a guy bartering is unnecessary.
Let me preface by saying I don't feel bad for the trader. I don't like "hippies" that out of one corner of their mouth say that it is society's responsibility to take care of everyone, then lowball street merchants on the other. And assume that had he paid a higher price, the guy would just spend it on booze. I don't like hypocrisy and self righteousness especially from people who don't even fucking work and are proud of being a loser who sleeps all day. My country is under attack from worthless people like that, so I guess just call me angry. And I don't give a fuck about karma, that's a bullshit theory.
deviate Ok. You have obviously heard some things from Bird Migration I have never heard. BM: '...in its proper context I guess, I had some more discussions with that person.' I've brought previous thoughts/feelings into present conversations before. I understand.
