Lord in Heaven hear my prayer.

    I cry in desperation.

I send these words into the air

    With an urgent, deep sensation.

Please give me the peace I seek

    Amidst my weekly toil.

Heal these aching bones that creak

    With your anointing oil.

In the dark and greasy hall

    I daily sell my time

    As the molten mountains fall

    The break-time whistle chimes.

    Let me see the ladder

    That Jacob once beheld

For this painful life is sadder

    Then fear that death compelled.

Give to me my daily bread,

That I can put on my table.

Erase at night my daily dread

    So tomorrow I’ll be stable.

    Refill me with your strength!

    My tired brain does stammer.

    Let my life have length

As I raise this burning hammer.

This is now my simple prayer

    A simple souls’ express.

    Not for wealth beyond compare

    But just for simple rest.

I realize now it’s not your task

    To break these horrid chains

I cannot receive the things I ask

    Until I end these pains.

So I must smash this hated yoke

By the virtue of my will

So just as clearly as I spoke

    My prayer will be fulfilled.
