June/July/August 1967: two extreme contrasts: Spraying 'Agent Orange' over Vietnam. 'The Monkees' August 1967. Bit strange that summer 1967 is called: "The Summer of Love". Number of American casualties in Vietnam summer 1967: http://www.countryjoe.com/solcas.htm
It wasn't the Summer Of Love for the assholes in the government, but for all the kids, it was a time when they could be free.
I was in California (in and out of the Haight) but I've since talked to people from all over the country. It was happening, to some degree, everywhere. It just didn't last that long.
there was no "summer" of love....it is just a name to refer to the specific time period....many say that it lasted a few years....im pretty sure the book Summer of Love went form like 1965 or 66 to 1972 or something..
I thought that "The Summer of Love" refered specifically to 1967?. What I mean is ..........who's kidding who???:
1967 was the summer of love for the runaway kids. They heard the song from Scott McKenzie. It written to serve the ultimate advertisement for the upcoming Monterey Pop Festival. And it worked. And the have heard of the Human be-in from Januari the 14th 1967. The summer of love for the San Franciscans and the real bohemians was in 1966. They did not like the developments of 1967. Alot of hard drugs dealers came to the haight and kids only seaking sex and drugs. So atracking the attention of the police who sometimes did razia's and arested all pot and acid dealers who's places were taken over by speed and heroin dealers. So they did the 'death of hippie parade' on oct 6th 1967 to celebrate the 1 year aniversary of making LSD illegal which was one the reason why the love turned bad. Now the police had reasons to harass the hippies
The "Summer Of Love" was the summer of 1967. But, it is only in reference to the San Francisco Haight-Ashbury district.
That is indeed a good Hmmm. It's not particularly well-written, but it certainly catches some of the spirituality that was a very thick layer in the bedrock of the Hippie revolution. peace, my friend.
Everyone seems to wish they were there.Checkin' out the cool vibes like the Monterey Pop Festival. Even the pop charts reflected this: 'Windy' by The Association. 'Light My Fire' by The Doors. 'All You Need Is Love' by The Beatles.'See Emily Play' by The Pink Floyd. 'We Love You' by The Rolling Stones.'Up,Up & Away' by The Johnny Mann Singers & The Fifth Dimension. In Britain during the August bank-holiday weekend we had: 'The Festival of The Flower-Children' in the grounds of Woburn Abbey. But......... What about the summer riots in the urban ghettos in the U.S.-i.e. Detroit, the war in Vietnam, Biafra, Indonesia,so many trouble-spots that summer?!.
the whole era of the late 60's and 70's to me was a summer of love. so much happening, so much changing. i got out of an abusive marriage and smoked my first pot in 73. learned about gloria steinem and got involved with civil rights, human rights, just plain out rights. it was a cool time, so much going on. free love was outrageous compared to the uptight 50's. miss those days, but i think it's happening again, lots of protests against the government, the war in iraq, human rights, cool to live these times too.
