As I've said before, the Blessed Virgin Mary is a pretty obvious borrowing of the feminine aspect of religion found in pagan religions. Nothing wrong with that actually. I think even protestant Christians sometimes lack that. But the present image the Catholics have of Mary probably came in 312 AD when the emperor Constantine made the Roman world Christian mostly for political reasons. And when he saw some people worshipping pagan gods he said, what the heck. Continue doing that. But now we'll call them saints.
