now is as good a time as any, just start using the right shampoo and let them lock up. You might not see the results for some time but it'll lock.

I prefer Dr. B's bar soap over the liquid stuff...you dont have to worry about diluting it none and it works great on my hair.....everyones hair is different though!

mine was shorter then yours when i sarted and it locked up pretty fast naturaly with no effort but lil playimng with it
and a hell of alot less pain then backcombing
backcombing doesnt really significanly speed up the process it only gives the ullysion of imediate results
people havbe actualy backcombed sio agressivly they yanked almost 1/2 out at the roots..so if u do backcomb, dont do it so agressivly you do dammage at least not excessive dammage i thinkbackcombing does damage no matter what unless u are very gntly.. but most of the time its not excessive enough to cause too bad of problemns
you can probly safely judge the amoint of damage by the amount of pain your scalps in.. but remember haiers more delicate then skin

i always say start natural as u let iut grow to backcomb u may want another 2 inches..but..buy the time u get 2 inches u most likeluy wuill see dreads formimng on theyre own
your hair looks thick i bt t will dread ez
a more gentle version..simular to hackcombing but just uses fingers
grab the end and finger tease the hairs towards the roots..noty alot just enough to get em to somewhat hold together then give em time
that would be alot gentlyer then baxckcombing and pretty much the same results

Yea, thats about how they looks after back-combing. Mine were a lot more fluffy then yours and stuck up everywhere, but my hair does that without being dreaded. I'd say you should wait a week or two to wash them. Wear a wool hat as much as possible. Resist the temptation to touch your hair.

if i were you i would wait, cause imo extremely short dreads look way too exentric lol not that it's about looks but you need to give it a little consideration am i right? lol ;) my hair was 12 inches past my bubis before i started and now 5 months later the ends barely touch my shoulders. but in the end it's up to you :)
