"Seek and you will find" i take the message of the gospel of thomas to mean to live life and find ourselves to find truth. But i dont see how this can be the true meaning when there are people who cannot understand, such as the mentally handicapped. Do people who cannot understand miss out on the meaning of life?

What you say is true providing that the "answers" are based upon intellectuality.
But what if that which is being sought is a living principle of pure being that is experienced rather than conjectured upon, and inviting it in opens one to receive it, thereby enriching life?
Ask and it shall be given.........

Exactly McRee. Spiritual truth is supramental, it is on a level the mnd cannot comprehend or understand.

Somebody with no understanding at all may is much happier than all of us
He already found what we will be looking for our whole life,
    Quiet mind

Handicaped people, without awareness of their handicap don't suffer of it
They may smile so often you would be amazed

Do you really think there is Truth that can be found?

if you take the quote from a non-religious stand point, it merely means that if you try to learn, you will learn.
