Please see my thread in Activism/The Environment/Iceland Resumes Whaling. You won't believe the flak I've been getting for taking an anti-whaling position.

That's a sad story. Isn't there a law against whaling?

There's national and local law, which can enforce statutes, fine people and jail them. Then there's international law, in this case, the International Whaling Commission. That's more like joining a club that says, if you go against our rulings, we'll send you a nasty letter saying we don't like you. So Iceland is ignoring an IWC ruling. So what? How many troops and ships does the IWC have?

So Iceland is saying, "We ain't wrong. We ain't sorry. And it's prob'ly gonna happen again."

(Photo shown is actually of a fin whale taken by the Nisshen Maru in the Antarctic. Same shit, different pile.)

On the other hand, there's Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which has rammed and sunk whaling ships in the past and just might do so in the future, if we provide financial support. I donated CDN$100 to them yesterday, and I'm unemployed. Sometimes you have to put your money where your mouth is.

I hope I don't use big words that Otter won't understand:

Welcome aboard, Otter. This one is the Ibsa II, sunk by Sea Shepherd off Africa in 1980.

Thats pretty cool, that means the whaler may fire upon the other ship, it will be like old pirate days out there.

I think I will try to hitch a ride with a whaler, man would love to rip the decks of a ship with a 101MM or even a 20MM chain gun, hell yeah!

While we all shiver through a frozen February, it's summer in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society continues to battle the Japanese whaling vessels such as Nisshen Maru using their own vessels Farley Mowat and Robert Hunter.

Sea Shepherd is currently accepting donations. See www.seashepherd.org.

We can't even trust scientists with whales. Whales killed for so called 'reserch' somehow ended up on japanese resturant tables.....

See the link? Good to see the sea shepards on the case.

Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru has been disabled by an engine fire, ending the threat to whales by Japan this Antarctic summer. Sea Shepherd vessels Farley Mowat and Robert Hunter have returned to Melbourne.

whoa, update: the nisshin maru is a potential disaster if oil leaks from it. the crew have requested that greenpeace stand by, after initially claiming they would never accept the help of "eco-terrorists". the new zealand government has strongly advised the japanese to remove their stranded vessel, to prevent a possible environmental catastrophe.

i'm all for sinking whaling vessels but the spectre of oil spills is way too risky. better to use non-fatal weapons against the crew members.

i was under the impression that the japanese majority at the IWC was merely symbolic. as far as i know, they haven't gained any power except for winning an impotent vote that they paid millions for. any actual changes still require a 75% majority- something inconcievable in the current situation.

i'm all for protecting whales, though the quest will soon become moot. scientists give us 50 years before the ocean eco-system collapses utterly. pretty much sums it all up. the only thing that could prevent this would be a drastic scaling back of fishing quotas, which is a joke to even consider.

we shall see how much the japanese enjoy the taste of fish when there are no more to catch. oh yeah, and it will be shit for every other human being, too.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is aware of the danger of pollution due to a sinking Nisshin Maru, but rejects responsibility for the engine fire and related electrical failures. They would be happy to stay home, provided the Japanese do the same. See www.seashepherd.org for related news releases.

The Boris Worm/Dalhousie report deals mostly with marketable fish species, while also addressing predictable ecosystem collapses due to biodiversity issues.

In the 2007-2008 whaling season in Antarctica, the Japanese will begin taking fifty endangered humpback whales, along with fifty endangered fin whales and 935 minke whales. There's a cull underway using a cleverly moulded silicon plug which is dispersed among the whale pods to be sucked into the blow holes (suffocated whales sink to the sea floor). Whale watching and whale eating, can stand simultaneously.

The Calgary Herald ran a good editorial cartoon a couple of days ago which I'm unable to retrieve on-line from its archive.

Overhead quote is "Japanese scientists say fifty humpbacks can be killed from a herd of tens of thousands without endangering the species". A humpback whale is shown thinking,
"With that same logic, we could just as easily kill fifty scientists."
