    4. In a cup of tap water, mix 2 or more teaspoons of ProcionĀ® MX dye. Apply the dye to the fabric using a squeeze bottle, paint brush, or sponge. Apply as many colors as you like, but do not over-saturate the fabric with dye as this may result in your colors running/bleeding together.

i can use the powder dye i have right :p?

i just dyed three shirts. It was really easy i just wraped some rubber bands around the shirts and dipped different ends into different colors and took the bands of and hung them up to dry. They look so cool! I did'nt need any ash or anything. They seem ok, they did'nt fade.
Sometimes its cool if you twist the shirt and then put the rubber bands on. Good luck

The ash helps the color stick, i think, but you don't need it. I did a couple with just rit dye over the summer and they turned out great.

    NO NO NO NO NO
Rit is NOT the same as procion. procion is aniline and Rit is acid...means nothing to you, i know but DO NOT use one for teh other (and if you must use acid dyes,at least get deka.

The soda ash in hot hot hot water preps the cotton for dyeing. Rit sells their own soda ash solution. I've gone both ways (stop it, you dirty minded person) and the treated cotton lasts LOT longer. I think we sent the last of my own tye-dyed tanks (circa 1993) to the thrift shop last year and they looked brand new.

edit: the COLORS looked brand new...

Back then I outfitted both my kids for late spring/summer/early fall with dyed tshirts/shorts/converse-style sneakers/hats for less than $30.00. Then they grew up and stopped wearing dyed stuff :(

Soda ash is a super-wetting ingredient that allows the liquid dye to penetrate better.
water creates surface tension, that's why a reall full glass of water can be a tiny bit higher than the glass.
soda ash breaks that tension, allowing the color to get in deep.
Rit has a prep agent in the blend...which is why you cannot jar it for later use. soda ash causes dye to break down and spoil.
direct app dyeing uses soda ash in the soak, not the dye jar.
those dyes can be used again.

just don't buy it again. it will NOT last as long s everyone says, because we forget the vibrancy it had on day one.
Rit fades quickly, esp in the sun (although it seems to work well on poly)
Anyone who uses RIT for resale should be beaten with a carrot.
