The Associated Press The world's tiger population could soon be extinct because of illegal trophy hunting, deteriorating habitats and the use of tiger parts in Eastern medicine, environmental experts warn. World Wildlife spokeswoman Marie von Zeipel says the tiger is one of the most threatened species and could face extinction within 12 years. The organization estimates that there are 3,200 tigers in the wild. Von Zeipel told The Associated Press that the wild tiger population has shrunk 97 per cent in 100 years and that "if nothing drastic happens the [population] curve is heading straight for disaster." Her comments on Friday came after the wildlife organization hosted a seminar in Stockholm about the plight of wild tigers. It would be horrible to never see such a beautiful creature ever again.
Eastern folk medicine is a big business over there, it seems to put a dent in a lot of endangered animal populations. I have no doubt it's the #1 cause of the tiger's decline. The trophy aspect surprises me a little, I thought that went out of style years ago. On the plus side, their are a lot of good animal sanctuary's and people dedicated to the tiger's survival. We have brought species back from the brink of extinction before.
Yep, pretty shitty, isn't it? Exactly the same thing is happening to whales and sharks. Indeed, if commercial fishing continues unabated, some estimates indicate there will be no more fish in the ocean in 60 years. But hey, who cares about biodiversity?
So basically when hollywood does a remake of Predator 2 the line in the movie will now go “He’s on safari .. the lions, the kittens, the bears,…oh my! Hotwater
Sad. You would think that after knowing about all the other species that have become extinct within our life time that we would wake up to what we are doing. Just sad.
I understand wanting to use "natural" medicine, but if it is threatening to extinct an animal, I'd start thinking about an alternative. Greedy bastards
That's the part I can never understand...what are these people planning to use after the animals are gone? Better to stop now than be forced to stop due to extinction and the rest of the world blaming you... We get squirrels and skunks doing that.
Horrible thing, but not surprising, nor even all that odd... A lot of our actions are going to start showing 'fruit' soon... What bothers me most about all this shit is that until its too late and the ecosystem collapses, the majority of people will argue that it isn't happening, or isnt serious...
What exactly IS supposed to happen? Are we going to blow up or will it just be another mass extinction like the dinosaurs?
If the world ends in 2012, fine. At least there'll still be some Tigers left by then. The worst part is, society never looks back. We never collectively say, "oh, we shouldn't have done that. We fucked up." Instead we stare at screens and forget.
apparently whatever happens...the only people to survive will be the ones who made secret underground bunkers
