theres been an earthquake in Pakistan to, and they dont get any help, anyway not the help they need. 60% of the victims are children and they will die if the help dont come soon. It will soon be winter there and they have no where to go...

I can say with [an oddly] remorseful certitude that I do not care.

Well its discusting whats going on, heres what one of my friends wrote somewhere else, good points made -

In Kashmir, "More than 50,000 people were killed and more than three million made homeless in the disaster on 8 October." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4360894.stm And it's estimated the same number could die over the winter if they don't receive relief supplies soon.

So, what are we doing about it?

What about that great defender of the free, the USA?

As of 13th October, "Washington has pledged $50 million in relief aid to Pakistan, a key ally in its fight against terror." http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2005-10-12-quake-slow-aid_x.htm As of the same date exactly 12, yes you read that right, 12 helicopters had been allocated to the relief effort.

Sound good? OK, have a look at this...

The Congressional Budget Office projects that the cost of the war in Iraq could surpass $80 billion in fiscal 2005. That would send total expenditures for the war past $200 billion. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4230935

Meanwhile, in the UK, "Visiting Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, Hilary Benn announced another £20m in aid - taking the total pledged to £33m." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/beds/bucks/herts/4361578.stm And let's be fair, we've also got 3 Chinook and 2 Puma helicopters over there.

Sounds great - until you compare it with the cost of murdering Iraqis :-

"The conflict in Iraq has cost taxpayers £3.1bn up to the end of March (2005), and since then the chancellor has put aside a further £400m in contingency funds. http://www.financialdirector.co.uk/accountancyage/news/2142580/taxpayers-bear-cost-iraq-war

If you were already wasting enormous amounts of money on one thing, would you not be rather stingy on others as well?

What about that great defender of the free, the USA? (Thanks Ashers)

    Yeah right?
If there is no Resources to exploit I doubt The USA will help anyone.
    Same goes for Tibet!
For so many years they have been slaughtered and killed and NO ONE has helped them either.
The USA talks a good game but it's all bullshit and about the $$.
We are in a War that is equal to a bunch of gangsters coming into another country and murdering whoever we deem fit.
The draft will start again here soon and this time women will be included.
I have spoken to many who are preparing safe houses across the USA to provide help to leave here.

i guess that sometimes you just can't really help what you feel or don't feel. a person whose got nothing left to offer and is just barely scraping by and is sorta worn out by it may just be incapable of feeling. i think that's understandable. whenyou're trapped in your own unhappy circumstances, it takes all you have just to get by day to day, physically and emotionally. callousness DOES have it's place in the ultimate survival of a human being. a person has to sorta scab-over for a while to heal, right?

though taht was just a rambling philisophical moment. i have no idea if that actually applies to talk show host

The best part of your post is that it may well be the reason I don't care, kc, now that I have read it. Your rambling philosophical moment goes much deeper than you probably imagine. The actual philosophical implications are present in this thread (Sofias' anger at me, and my refusal to do anything to 'help') but the 'why' of it all is rooted in the functioning of the brain. Perhaps any of the psych majors in here may be able to expand. It is the contention of some that we decide every single thing we decide in an instant and fill in the reasons later. Whether or not the instant in which we decide any given thing is based on every other experience we have ever had that is already in our mind and memory and ready to be used (like a loaded gun that awaits the pull of the trigger) is where the psychologists can help.

So when I hear that people need help I may immediately decide whether or not I want to help, with a simple yes or no. The reasons, whether I have some personal issues that close me off from the world and caring, whether I'm a modified Hobbesian at heart, or whether I can legitemately call into question the notion of altruism, don't matter (even if they are part of the precursor, they are unconscious) until I am forced to explain why I made the decision.

There is a book called Blink by Malcom Gladwell that expounds this theory. Maybe you'd find it interesting. I did. I'm not entirely sure if I'm convinced if this is the case with decision making or not, but it sure does explain a lot.

Of course I was careful to put in my original statement that I feel an odd remorse at my choice. The odd remorse, of course, can be explained by the fact that I have absolutely no idea why I say what I say. And by the fact that all I really need to justify anything is an explanation that suits my fancy.

But for the sake of simplicity, lets just say that it does apply to Talk Show Host.

    Wizz,Ashers,Sofia,Penny..

I hope I can do something..
even it's only 10 euro..I'm willing to give it to a good cause..
    I've been in India..and i must say..now this earthquake..
why it has to happen in the midst of a hot political Kasjmir area???
Since 1947 the Kasjmiri question is still hanging..
    India/Pakistan fight for a territory...you know Srinagar..
was called the Switserland of India..it's in shatters now..
because of religious and territorial disputes...
The Karakoram Highway in Pakistan is a rugged area..
not easily accessible..people who live there are simple
and already poor..can one imagine their suffering now??
Since 1989 Kasjmir is in a state of emergency...
in Delhi and Karachi..now..in this time of emergency..
they should put their hands together...and join hands...
instead of solving it with gunfire..
I'm at least glad..that Belgium does something...

    Emiel..

    Extra help for earthquake victims

Belgium has donated an extra EUR 1 million to assist the victims of the earthquake in Pakistan. Belgian aid now amounts to EUR 2,035 million, Overseas Development Minister Armand de Decker said. Meanwhile, the Belgian earthquake medical team, B-Fast, returned home from the disaster area on Sunday. It was operational for 10 days
