I've been trying to astral project for AGES and just never seem to be able to do it. I think I got quite close once. I could sort of feel myself leaving my body.
Does anyone have any tips on how to do it? Things that have worked for them, etc? It would be much appreciated.

I have only done it twice, and that was accidentally. I used to try a lot with no success. Basically what happened was I was having trouble getting back to sleep. The only drug I was on was a little Vicodin tussin syrup I took for a little buzz (and to help me sleep) several hours before I went to bed.

I was laying there on my stomach and I started feeling this buzzing in my head and hearing these voices in my ears. The voices were random and scattered and there were a lot of them. I couldn't really place what was being said because they were going so fast. I think it was more of an auditory hallucination though, than anything real. I was looking across my room thinking I was awake (but actually had my eyes closed) and I thought I saw my cat in the room. I think he even came and sat on the bed, but a minute later I opened my eyes for real and he was gone. I couldn't feel my body except for this buzzing in my head and a sense of thirst. I wanted to get up and have a drink but decided not to since I wanted to continue this experience (that I was convinced would lead to an OOBE). I don't think I could have moved if I wanted to.

It should be noted that I studied lucid dreaming and experimented with it a lot when I was around 14 -15. and a couple years after that I read robert monroe's "journey's out of the body" so i had some knowledge about the subject. I experimented with leaving my body while reading that book but i guess it just didn't make sense to me and i was never successful in acheiving the required state.

Since I felt I had reached that state, I decided to try to leave my body. It was happening anyway without much effort from me. I felt my legs lifting and encouraged that, then decided to try something I had read about called "the rope method".
To do this you reach for an imaginary rope above your head (surprisingly easy when you're in the right state) and climbing up it (without actually moving your physical body).

To my surprise, I actually lifted out of my body and was able to view my room. At some point, I got confused and thought I'd woken up and gotten out of bed. I tried to look at my cell phone to see the time, with some difficulty in making out the numbers. I felt very clumsy and heavy. I looked at my bed to try and see if my body was in it. I couldn't see it, but i imagined this was my mind rebelling. I tried to go downstairs, but I ended up back in my body.

After I woke up I picked up my phone and it was 11:30. I tried to simulate the experience again, imagining the buzzing feeling in my forehead and visualizing myself navigating around the room. After about 15 minutes of this with no avail, I decided to give up.

The other instance occurred pretty close to this one, and was similar since it also occurred after some sleep.
I was never able to reach this state on purpose, so the only thing I have to say is that after you do reach this state, leaving your body does seem to be pretty easy. I can't explain how I did it now, but it was surprisingly easy to move my "astral" body if you will without disturbing my physical. You just have to want it, and it will likely be so.

Wandering Im not discounting your experience by saying that this was not your astral body, because surely it was. But I've had many, many experiences with self-seperation while on opiates that come automatically and the explanation for this is that Morphine is named after Morpheus the god of dreaming for a reason ;)
I find that there is a direct link between dreaming, sleep paralysis, seizures, and self-seperation, all side effects of both opiates and psychedelics. I even wrote an entire report on it for free and sent it to a researcher gathering information on sleep paralysis as well as one gathering under epilepsy and explained the correlation I make between external chemically aided astral projection as well as sober projection, including the seizures I've had before, during, and after many of my own adventures. Not suprisingly, I never heard back from either of them ever again, and that was over 3 years ago

I was going to mention the same wandering. I'm thinking the opiates might have played a heavy hand in that. I'm not sure if that's what the OP is looking for.

No, I found that a really interesting account, and even if it was 'helped along' by chemicals it sounds like it was an amazing experience. And had some good tips in it. Thanks!

No, I see what you're saying. I did doubt whether it was a true experience or not, but I do feel as though I really left my body. The reason I added that I had taken Vicodin was because I was convinced it was what had helped the experience (since I'd never had one before).
I'm inclined to agree with your ideas. :) I'm sorry you never heard back from them. :(

I know Moro needs more information, Floydian. I was just telling her my interesting experience with it.

From what I have researched, it is easier to connect when your body is strained in some manner ie, lack of sleep, or ingestion of narcotics. From use of the drug you should know its effects, if it felt different then its quite possible that it was.

Chemical substances are nothing but a crutch. Astral projection is obtainable through meditation. When you shut your eyes your visual cortex is no longer stimulated like it was when you were seeing. In deep meditation you can attempt to see without seeing. Try to use your eyes as you would if they were open. If you are able to maintain this for a good while you may begin to feel like you are being pulled. At this point it will be difficult to maintain focus, but if you can and you can also let yourself go it will happen. It's best to do this laying down and in a position that you are comfortable with not moving. You should be perfectly still while this is happening. The only movement should come from breathing. A word of advice, though: if you are gone too long you may find it difficult to return. If you see a black flat object, don't be alarmed. These are like portals that do not allow light to pass through them. Above all, don't panic. Initially this will prematurely end your projection, but if you've been out of body for a while panic will cause difficulting in trying to return. If there is something specific you want to experience have a destination in mind while you do this. It is also best to do this after you've had a full night's sleep so that you will not fall asleep when you are trying to do this.

well if you find any, good luck and dont forget to lock your car doors and windows when your out, you know how theres plenty of others waiting for the opportunity to take the wheel, or the radio while your away.

and even with locking the doors it dont stop those determined 'theifs', and when you return, how would you know you aint allowed an unwelcome guest to abide in the boot or the engine? I shudder to think.

    enjoy.
