Im not much of a fan personally but thats probabl because we have to hear it whenever we switch on the tele. Its quite nice with a smoother voice but they have a tendency to sound course and make my ears ache, especially the whiny kids, teens and young women shown in the films There you go
PS my silly Brit ears hear all American accents as more or less the same Except more southern accents...thats about all I can distinguish. Otherwise its just "American". Funny how we all adapt to the different sounds were around
Eh, I like accents of *real* American people, but the ones on the TV just piss me off. Only real accent I don't like is Bronx/new York in general.. whiny crap
Even the real people on TV annoy me. They dont have to be acting, just Americans having a chat. It can grate
Probably because with the TV you only get sound and vision, whereas in real life youve got pheremones and proper body language and all kinds of different interactions going on...so you may well semi consciously think "God what an annyoing accent" but youve got other stuff to focus on like actually getting to know the person, looking in their eyes etc, and you may well just think "actually, Im going to let you off, youre alright. It could even grow on me"...With TV the sounds just getting in without that and I think tele makes peoples voices harsher too. I know ours just sounds annoying Either that or Im talking total bollocks again Well, Ive got excuses :leaving:
lol makes sense, i've been trying to figure out how my accent sounds to someone who isn't as used to it. i guess i can understand how it's seen as whiny
Do most British accents sound the same to you? I cant even imgine that haha. Theres such diversity here. But then I guess there is over there and I just cant tell
haha, i guess most of them sound pretty similar to me. i can recognize english accents, i normally get scottish and irish accents confused lol. stuff like that. but i guess it's just 'cause i'm not too exposed to british dialect in general
Chunky_Charcoal, i'm originally from the US, but been living in England now for a few years. I used to get Scottish and Irish accents mixed up myself. But the longer I live over here, the more I pick up on the differences. And well, every once and again, they love to throw a Welsh accent in to really make your head spin! It's bizarre actually, because I find myself cringing at times to other American accents I hear. Some are soothing, but just some ways certain words are said do tend to make my ears go funny. Then again though, I keep getting told that I have a lovely accent (I'm from Western, NY). So not sure what is up with these crazy English people. I have one dear friend who lives in London, who just loves the way I say Camden Town. I was talking to her once, telling her about going there, and she stopped me and made me say "Camden Town" for her about 4x before she'd let me finish the sentence. HA HA!
I find some of them pretty annoying tbh. I quite like mild American accents, as in American, but not too distinct.
mine's very nice. i think dave's is wonderful. it was so unique when we first met that it took me all night of talking to him to figure out everything he was saying. people get a real kick out of listening to him, he's an awesome speaker. i find most british accents to be pretty poor sounding, like, ghetto, you know?
i think we've been getting an over-exposure of uk society, because the whole "brits sound so smart" thing is dying off kinda fast. used to be everyone thought it sounded so clever and educated, but since we're getting a closer view on the society as a whole, it's just another ghetto.
