To Anyone Who Can Answer This Question Of Mine

I'm the only hippie in my community,and I was wondering why people hate,and are always so mean to hippies.

 

So that you can wear the mantle of a martyr.

 

It's not how people act, but how you REACT to how they act, that matters...
or to let the Dead phrase it in another way, 'If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind'

I don't think people always hate, I think people misunderstand a lot of things, and what they don't understand they tend to mistrust. Cetainly in this day and age hippies are few and far between so of course people have no idea where your coming from, the best way to deal with people that you think hate you or are being mean to you is to repay them with your understanding and be kind to them, thats the only way you can change their perception of you and what you're all about..

Of course I don't know your community there, but I'd say, just give them time to get to know you and to see that you're no threat, just peaceful and loving..
We lead by example.

Sweetie, people don't like what they don't know and don't want to know what they don't already. Sometimes, people are just mean and hateful. The best you can do is try to not let it get you down and hope for things to get better.
We are who we are and they are who they are. Sometimes, the best thing is to agree to disagree.

I think Silverhippy said it pretty well. I might add that in your dealings with these folks just be yourself and tell the truth. Be honest and forthright. Be reliable. Lead by example. Like don't be a litterbug. Be nice to animals and little kids and older senior citizens. Cuz old people know stuff. I know they know stuff cuz I am 58 and I know alotta stuff.

But by the same token if you're gay or bi and smoke the herb from time to time you might want to exercise good common sense when you're out and about. B4 you proclaim to your part of the world that you're the poster child for gay rights and legalizing cannabis take a good hard look at those around you. Better safe than sorry. Off duty LEO are NEVER not cops so mind your Ps and Qs when you're smoking a bowl in the park or at the beach. Never carry more herb on you than you are prepared to lose if you get busted.

People that hate hippies often don't understand why hippies are the way they are. Just like some liberals don't like rednecks that enjoy their 2ndA rights. I am a redneck. I am also a firm believer in 2ndA rights. I used to be a homophobe too. I'm not now but it took a long time for me to change. But I feel as tho I am a better man for it.

Just be yourself. Lead by example. Be a good steward of your little piece of ground. Once folks see you're in it for the long haul most will warm up to you. Concern yourself with your own karma. It'll work out.:daisy:

 

Personally, I don't like anyone that subscribes themselves to a subculture rather than being an individual.

People probably wouldn't take too kindly to jazz fans going around in zoot suits with slicked back hair, either.

My take is when you choose to be different, it doesn't make any sense to complain about being treated different.

Learn to take it, or give up your lifestyle.

I agree with this to a certain extent. I think a lot of times people dislike the caricature that people who try too hard to fit in a label often create.

I've actually found that, although people have a lot of fun making fun of hippies, most people love hippies. I don't mean hippies that define themselves as hippies, but people that just try to be themselves and are generally defined as hippies by other people.

Like me. I'm all the time being called a hippie by others, but I never really come across anyone that dislikes me for it. I think most people respect the fact that I'm not afraid to be myself.

Anytime I'm out in public with a large group of my friends, we get a lot of positive attention. We all look like a bunch of ragmuffins (heh, old fashioned term my grandma always used) and I'm sure plenty of people look at us and think, "oh, dirty hippies.." but the fact remains that we always look like we're having fun, we don't care what anyone thinks about us, we put out a lot of positive energy, and people respond well to that.

I think that applies to anything. If someone is trying too hard to fit into a certain subculture, most people aren't going to respect them for the simple fact that they're trying to be someone they're not.

If you just act like yourself and live your life in the most positive way you can, most of the time people find that to be a very likeable quality and respond positively.

People are always going to make fun of hippies in general though. Stop labeling yourself a hippie or get used to it

 

My Gramma used to call them raggamuffins. If they were lawbreakers maybe she might call them stumblebums. My Gramma and Grampa were both from the UK. Was yours?
